I have a customization and we have used the Hours EDT. Now I need to change the property to allow zero in the field. Can I change this property or will it effect anything as it is a system EDT.

Creating extension for this edt is possible , so nothing is stopping you from changing the property. If you change it to yes , where it is used you are going to that effect .

You can change this value if you create EDT extension (docs.microsoft.com/.../modify-edt). But since it's EDT from the platform, you need to think twice, as the change will have global effect. If you just need to change it in your customization it's better to create new EDT and use it.

Yes this was my concern as it would have global effect. Also we have already used this EDT field in our customization and there is data in this field. So now if I create a new EDT and use it, will it effect the existing data?

You can create new EDT with the same type and put Hours to Extend property. For new EDT you can change "Show zero" property to No. The data will not be changed.

The property impacts how data is shown, not how it's stored. So it will not change your old or new data. But all data that uses this data type will be displayed according to the property.
