Switching from one Deployment Scenario to another

Posted on by 235

We are planning migration from PSA to PO.  I see the deployment type guide but I haven't seen any resources on further migrating from one deployment type to another.  If we deploy 'Lite' initially and subsequently decide to migrate to 'Resource/Non-Stocked', are there any guides/resources which refer to that?

Switching between Deployment Types (If we deploy 'Lite' initially and subsequently decide to migrate to 'Resource/Non-Stocked', are there any guides/resources which refer to that?) in ProjOps is not supported.

No workaround here: data migration will be required if you want to use Integrated Mode and have PSA data.

Thanks!  Alexander for a very thorough answer.  Though I am surprised to learn about the licencing issue.  I don't think I have come across that explicitly mentioned anywhere else.  The licensing guide says PO licence can access any additional non-restricted entities.  Do you happen to know specifically which restricted tables are accessed in the non-stocked scenario or if it is listed anywhere?

I have reviewed this..but firstly it refers to PSA not PO (perhaps just an oversight) and secondly I would need to know what tables the various deployments need to access.

And yes - very happy to explore the other suggestions in your reply..but just want to clarify this point here first if possible?

    Hi ghdunn,

for upgrade information see the following publication of Microsoft: Upgrade from Project Service Automation to Project Operations | Microsoft Docs .

What do you exactly mean with "migrating from one deployment type to another"? The Deployment Types contain different features/functions and are firstly dependent of your licenses. Without the correct licenses you will not be able to use defined features of the Deployment Types. Therefore, I give you a short overview of the mentioned Deployment Types and necessary licenses:

The Lite-Deployment is used for Project Sales and Project Management functions and therefore contains no connection to Dynamics 365 Finance/Supply Chain resp. Finance and Operations. It can be seen as a standalone App. The application is based on the Microsoft Power Platform. D365 Project Operations licenses are needed.

The Resource/Non-Stocked based Scenario Deployment contains Project Sales, Project Management and Accounting functions in combination of Dynamics 365 Project Operations and Dynamics 365 Finance/Supply Chain resp. Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. The application is based on the Microsoft Power Platform (Project Operations) and Microsoft Lifecycle Services (Finance/Supply Chain). The connection is done via the Power Platform Integration and Dual Write. D365 Project Operations licenses such as D365 Finance/Supply Chain resp. Finance and Operations licenses are needed.

If you want to switch from the "Lite-Deployment" to the "Resource/Non-Stocked Scenario Deployment" later I would mention that this is not really foreseen in default as the features and at least your data is different (these are two different processes). From D365-Architecture side in my opinion it should be possible as you do not really have to use all functions and features  per Deployment Type (Dual Write can be used anyway, too and in different scales per Dynamics 365 applications). But in worst case you will face differences in your transferred data which can be irreversibel and wrong after the change.

As far as I know there is no "guide" of the change of deployment types available, yet.

    Rg,

    Alexander

*Due to the complex and different possibilities of deploying Dynamics 365 I highly recommend not to setup the application without some expert/partner or support. (For more information contact me under anassl@inno-solutions.info or visit www.inno-solutions.de)
