Refresh CRM2016 UAT from CRM2016 PROD

Hi all, hope this is the appropriate spot to ask this question, based on what I see as various CRM forums.

We have an on-premise CRM2016 production system and a CRM2016 UAT instance, which over time has been tested against so much, the data is now way out of sync with PROD. This has made new changes and testing problematic with UAT not reflecting the current reality of PROD given all customization of plug-in, workflows, etc. …

The question is, I want to refresh the UAT instance with PROD data, so they are back in sync from a data perspective. What are the recommended steps tp carry out to refresh the UAT instance from PROD?

I have been trying find specific CRM2016 steps involved, but keep coming up empty for this version.

Thanks in advance,

John

Found the steps through another query and apparently it comes down to this if anyone else needs to do this.

    1. Get database backup of prod instance.

    2. Restore database in Dev or UAT using SQL management studio.

    3. Go to deployment manager on Dev or UAT front end server.

    4. Import organization from existing database and connect it to the previously restored one.

    5. Later remove the prod data by logging into application.

@WebGeek , I am quite new and seeking for more information on Refreshing UAT with Prod, since you have already done it you can help me:

    1) How often do you refresh

    2) Are there any cons of refreshing UAT frequently

    3) What happens to solutions, say in Production if i have 3 solutions(A, B and C) and in UAT i have 4 solutions(A, B1, C1 and D, where A is common in both environments, B1 and C1 are third party and D is my new solution which i plan to import in Production soon) what happens to these soluions in UAT after a refresh, do i loose the ones not in Production or after refresh UAT will have all solutions including the ones from Production also?

    5) Is there a way to just refresh the data and not solutions?

    Thanks in advance.

    1) We refresh our DEV and UAT about 3-4 times a year. With testing and fixing issues, the environments get out of sync with PROD rather quickly. We have constant active development happening.

    2) None - However, we run scripts to rename contact email addresses to something like @dummy.org to ensure registrants don't get emails by accident. We also turn of the SMTP config to be sure nothing gets out.

    3) To refresh you have two options, ensure all solutions are in PROD before you do the refresh, or refresh DEV/UAT and reapply new solutions not yet in PROD. We will generally refresh our DEV/UAT once all the solutions have been deployed to PROD.

    5) Not that I am aware of. It seems to be an all or nothing operation.

    Hope that helps.

One addition thing I have developed is a series of SQL scripts to rename email addresses, some configuration settings, and other things like disable the SMTP settings. This ensures UAT is stand alone, email is prevented from going out by accident to clients, modify payment gateway settings and anything else to detach UAT from PROD.  We run a DEV & UAT setup and has worked like a charm for DEV & UAT for user testing.

The only catch, since other sites are unique what they do with the CRM, the SQL scripts developed are custom to your setup.

Over time, I have created a refresh document for the organization to allow others do the same once I am no longer there.
