Licensing Changes

Posted on by 575

Hi guys

I'm aware that there have been some changes made to the licensing model for D365 but I have a fairly specific question that hopefully someone will know. We have a client who is relatively small (6 users) and they've been using D365 Customer Engagement quite happily for a few years now. They use the Portal as well and have a number of external users who access this (by logging in) and updating some information.

The licenses have expired on 31 October 2019 and I was under the impression that they would still be able to purchase the CE licenses for a further 12 months as they are "in transition" essentially. Come October 2020 they'd need to move to a new license. However, they've been told by the reseller who looks after them (it's not ourselves as they are tied to a university) that the licenses are no longer available and that they need to buy the new license types now. Is that correct? Do they need to move now and I've picked up this transition period incorrect? Was it only available for those that would be changing prior to the new pricing coming into effect on 1 October 2019?

On top of this, they've been told they now need a minimum of 20 users for Sales. This puts the price up by a factor of almost 4 even when moving to the "lower cost" Sales App only.

All seems a little weird to me that they'd be punished for having a smaller user base.

To compound the issue, they use the Portal (as I mention) and we'd told the user, who is in discussions with the reseller, to let the reseller know they "use the Portal and you'll need to know how the new pricing model for this will work going forward"...and they've quoted them for a D365CE Additional Portal (which isn't what they asked for nor what I asked them to tell them). And since they can't provide D365DE license costs, how can they quote them for a D365CE Additional Portal!?

All seems a bit weird to me as I assumed with the new licensing model we were not changing the minimum requirements for user licenses so this has come as a bit of a shock to them (and to me).

I know when there are changes there are usually bumps in the road but this just seems a little weird to me. Anyone out there got any advice on who to speak to about this?

Cheers

Steven

    RE: Licensing Changes

    Hi partner,

I checked the November Microsoft Dynamics 365 Licensing Guide, which still has the requirements for the Minimum License Purchase Requirements.

Applications on the Academic price list must purchase a minimum of 20 full user licenses:

    • Sales

    • Customer Service

    • Field Service

    • Project Service Automation

Also, regarding the details of the license, I recommend you contact Billing Team support.

    Hi Hao

Thanx again for that. However that refers to the July guide and the November guide now has this part removed. I'm guessing this has now been done to keep this in line with the new updated licensing model but I need to speak with the university CSP and ask why they are being "punished" like this at what I'd call a transition point in the licensing model.

They don't use any of the main Sales functionality of the system and tbh could probably get away with Team member licenses but they do use a Portal for external access (for students to access parts of the system) and they'd need to maintain this (this is why they used the D365CE Plan licences in the first place.

I know the Portal model has changed/is changing as well but there does not seem to be any pricing available for academia on this yet...just the $200 per 100 logins mentioned in the presentations I've seen and this is proving problematic as well.

No one was available from MS to speak to me from MS Sales yesterday (go figure) so I'll try again today.

    Cheers

    Steven

    Hi partner,

Yes, currently if you purchase the new applications license, then you have to purchase a minimum of 20 full user licenses.

This requirement does not apply to existing Academic customers who have previously enrolled on or before October 31, 2016, but these customers are required to maintain at least a 5-seat minimum in accordance with the prior program requirements.

The following is the content of the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Licensing Guide.

Applications on the Academic price list must purchase a minimum of 20 full user licenses:

    • Dynamics 365 Plan

    • Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement Plan

    • Dynamics 365 for Sales

    • Dynamics 365 for Customer Service

    • Dynamics 365 for Field Service

    • Dynamics 365 for Project Service Automation

This requirement does not apply to existing Academic customers who have previously enrolled on or before October 31, 2016, but these customers are required to maintain at least a 5-seat minimum in accordance with the prior program requirements.

In addition, you could refer to this link to know the price of each application: https://dynamics.microsoft.com/en-sg/pricing/#Sales

    RE: Licensing Changes

Thanx for the reply Hao but it's not pre-sales. They are current subscribers and have been for about 3 years now. They've been told by their CSP that they need to purchase 20 licences minimum (and they only have 6 users) and I'm guessing this is going to be because they are using Academia VL so no way around this but I can't seem to find absolute guidance on this anywhere.

I'll try the link though and see if I can get someone to answer the question.

    Cheers

    Hi partner,

Since this question is about pre-sales, I would recommend you contact Billing Team support.
