Customer Alphanumeric DUNS Number

Hi D365 Community,

My customer mentioned that some clients have an alphanumeric DUNS Number, and it's necessary to adapt the DUNS Number field accordingly. My functional consultant stated that this isn't possible, but considering that it's common practice among US businesses, does anyone know how to enable this field to accept alphanumeric characters? If not, is customization an option

Thank you

    Hi,

By default, the DUNS Number field in D365 F&O only accepts numeric values since it's stored as an int64. So if you need to use alphanumeric DUNS numbers, your functional consultant is right — it's not supported out-of-the-box.

That said, customization is possible. You can:

Extend the relevant table (like CustTable or VendTable)

Replace or add a new string-based field to handle alphanumeric input

Alternatively, if customization isn’t an option, you can also repurpose another unused string field (like a custom attribute or user-defined field) and relabel it as DUNS. Just make sure users understand which field to use.

Let us know what direction you’re leaning — happy to help either way.

    Regards,

    Zain

I can confirm that this field is alphanumeric by default, as it is linked to a “DirDunsNumber” table containing a string field with a size of 9 characters.

    Hi,

The DUNS number field is technically alphanumeric, but there is a validation that all characters should be numeric. This aligns with the official DUNS numbering system. There is also something known as DUNS+4 where you can add 4 alphanumeric characters, but this is not an official DUNS number provided by Dun & Bradstreet and for that reason not available.

On the vendor bank account, there is a field for the DUNS+4 segment. In case you need the field to store DUNS+4 elsewhere, you can consider a customization.
