Great Plains 9, need to create a new company WITHOUT GP Utilities?

I have a problem, and hopefully someone has a workaround. Back in the beginning of the year, we finally started our upgrade process to take us to the current version of GP from 9.0. We had started all the prep work, including moving our DBs over to our shiny new SQL 2008 R2 server while remaining on 9.0. Previously, our setup had been pretty static for many years, so no one noticed that GP actually HAD a server install, and didn't replace it when that box had a major failure 4 years ago. We then had a direction shift that put the upgrade on hold, leaving us with a GP 9.0 install on SQL Server 2008 R2, and most everything works ok.

YES, I know we're foolish, shortsighted, etc etc. And I also know we need to move to a supported version. Believe me, I know.

Unfortunately, we now need to create a new company. I've installed GP Utilities on  a 2k3 box we have here, but when I log into it, I get the message "Your current SQL Server is not a supported version. <shows required and actual> You need to upgrade to SQL Server 8.0 before continuing"

The only thing I can think to do is to create a bare db with the next sbm0# name, and restore a backup of on of our other DBs to it, then add a record to sy001500 referencing it, and a sa record to sy60100 giving sa access to that company id, then log in and wipe the data.

I have no idea if that will work, but I need to get something in place urgently.

I am open to, and would greatly appreciate any advice.

The only other thing I can think of is someway of killing or fooling the SQL Verification of the Utilities, but I've not yet come up with a way to do so that works.

Yes, we have one customer with GP 9.0 and Forms Printer.  We have not seen any issues with it running on Win 7.

I believe the XP mode was because we couldn't get the Forms printer module to work correctly in Win7, have you had any experience with that?

    Hi Jeremy,

Just to address your Win 7 XP mode comment - we have plenty of customers still running GP 9.0 and it's just fine on Windows 7, no need for XP mode (unless, of course you're using that for something else).  Here is a blog post that goes over how to accomplish this: blogs.msdn.com/.../windows-7-and-microsoft-dynamics-gp.aspx.

    RIchard,

Thanks for the response. We are running GP 9. Actually, it works quite well on SQL 2008 R2, the only problem is the SSRS reports won't tie in anymore, so we have to pull them from outside of GP.  In the realm of possible problems, that's pretty manageable, particularly considering it was SUPPOSED to be short term.  We have more problems running the client on Win7 XP mode.

Because this is our main production install, I hesitate to mess with Dynamics as a whole, though those were good suggestions.

I actually got this to work last night, and our Accounting department is testing the results now, and it looks promising.

You were definitely correct, though, there were more table references in Dynamics than I'd listed.

I'm really looking forwards to our upgrade, but our internal requirements call for  a full test-bed environment to be in place for a month of tests  before I can roll out the new version, and this requirement came in last week and had to be done this week. Ahhh...the joys of IT. :)

Thanks again for the ideas, hopefully I can do something more sane like that if this comes up again.

    -Jeremy

So are you running GP 2010 or GP 9? If you are running GP 9 I am surprised to hear you can log into GP with a SQL 2008 R2 server. Apparently GP 9 Utilities is not as forgiving. The only thing I can think of would be to emulate a server move(KB 878449) back to a workstaiton running SQL 2005 and then create the new company there and then do a server move back to the original server. When you go back you will need the DYNAMICS database plus the new company database. YOu could jsut do a SQL detach/attach to get them onto the new server. Do not add any users to the new company until you get it onto the 2008 R2 server. There are other tables involved in addition to the Sy01500 table so it would be best to copy over the entire DYNAMICS database. Can't say I have ever done this so I wish you luck!

Of course, another course of action would be simply upgrade to GP 10 SP5 on the old server and then you could add the new compnay on the 2008 R2 server. Finally you could then upgrade to GP 2010 or even GP 2013 now that it is released, if you are truly brave!
