Is exchange server is necessary to integrate outlook with Axapta 2009 ?

Hi,
the integration between AX and Outlook is done "directly".Exchange is not necessary to get the outlook integration working.
This is because AX calls the outlook object model "directly".
I want to do Outlook integration with AX 2009 can plz help me to how can do this. I am in very urgent to do this for my client.
