We are an manufacturing company,we have implemented Navision.

We need to run Adjust Cost-Item Entries Monthly.

But this Adjust cost batch job is changing the average cost amount taking into consderation old item which have been consumed & closed for calculation.

If i put user allowed posting date for current month & run the job then system is throwing error(posting Date is not within your allowed posting date)

Can anyone explain what actual does this Adjust Cost-Item Entries does with New(Open) & Old(Closed) entries in Item ledger Entry,Value Entry,Item Card.

Regards

Manish Sharma

    Mi Manish,

before we get started, I need to get some basic information:

1/ and most importantly, which version of NAV are you on, Objects and Database. You can get this in NAV by clicking Help About, and you will get a number maybe something like :

Version US 4.00 SP2 (5.00)  its important to know the complete version. this is because the update routine is very different, especially with regards to average cost.

2/ Are you using Average cost for all your Items (Manufactured and Raw materials).

3/ How are you reporting average cost, for example do you mean by looking at the field ont he item card, or form the Inventory valuation report. If from the report, are you back dating the report.

I know that a lot of people use average costing in manufacturing, but it is a very complex thing to work with, and I would personally always recommend the use of FIFO or standard costing in a manufacturing environment. In fact you have the ability to report average costing better with FIFO costing that the average. I just went through this with a Manufacturing company and showed them that FIFO will give them a much better solution than Average. But I do understand that its often easy to get tied to terminology, and the accountants come in and say "We Want Average Cost, So You Must Select Average Costing In Navision" without really knowing the full impact it will have on their business.

First, the cost adjustments are automatically posted by the system using the Allow Posting From field in the general ledger setup.  The date on this field should be at least WITHIN the allow posting dates specified on the user setup.  Remember, that when user tries to post an inventory transaction and if you have automatic cost adjustment posting ticked in the inventory setup, then NAV will try to forward the cost changes behind the scene.

The Adjust Cost - Item Entries batch job does two things - (1) it performs cost calculations to identify any cost changes in the Value Entry table and then, (2) checks whether the cost previously posted to the G/L is the same with the current cost in the Value Entry table.  If NAV finds any cost difference, then it posts the cost difference to the g/l as cost adjustment.

    What is your costing method?
