Mail Merge being deprecated in 365

Posted on by 40

I am trying to find a workaround for Mail Merge being deprecated in 365:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/get-started/whats-new/customer-engagement/important-changes-coming#mail-merge-is-deprecated

The demo videos only cover running Document Templates for single records with no mention of being able to run a Word template on multiple records which is a common requirement. Does anyone know what I can use as an alternative to the lost functionality of Mail Merge? Thanks

Did you find any custom solution to this problem?

I was afraid that was the answer. I will just have to wait until they improve the functionality with the new document generation since there is no replacement for Mail Merge at this time. Thanks all

Word Templates is not a direct replacement of Mail Merge.

It provides some of the same functionality using the newer version of MS Office documents, but features such as Mail Merge are not incorporated in it.

You can get those features by using Workflows as some others have mentioned previously.

Mail Merge is a common requirement, so I think this is your only alternative at the moment.

    Good luck. Hope this helps.

    Hi,

Unfortunately there is no oob functionality yet to run it on multiple records (s mentioned above) but you can create a workflow and run the template  and then run that workflow for multiple records. This will add the document as a note.

    Hi Goutam,

I am familiar with creating templates, however, running a Word template on multiple records doesn't seem to be possible. I am really looking to create mailing labels based on records from a CRM view. The training videos and documentation reference a template running on a single record. That won't work for the purposes of mailing labels which require being able to run it on multiple records. Is is possible to run a Word template on multiple records similar to the current mail merge functionality?

    Hi ,

Now Microsoft Dynamics CRM allows server-side document generation using Word and Excel templates dynamics 365 , so once you have the template you can use these template as similar like mail merge.

Here is some reference , hope this helps -
