Entering Dimensions on a sales order using config packages

Hello,

I trying to load dimensions on the sales order header and sales order lines using a configuration package.

I have tried loading the Sales Order Header and Sales line using tables 36 and 37.

I can only see options to load shortcut dimensions 1 and 2.

I have managed to load dimensions one and two on the Sales line but not on the Sales order header

Could someone advise on the following please:

1. What is the correct way / tables to use when loading dimensions on Sales Order header and lines when using Config Packages?
2. Is there any way to add other dimensions apart from shortcut dimensions one and two?

Thanks
I have the same question (0)

Hi, This is a very good question.

I has similar question few years back when I did one implementation with big number of dimensions.
Actually you can use dimensions as columns in the Configuration Package. For this what you need to do is for both of you tables - Sales Header and Sales Line, you need to set "Dimensions as Columns" Boolean as true.

Now if you check the fields, you will find that system has added all the dimensions as columns into the Config Package fields.

Now you can Export the Excel and update values by importing the file. Works like a magic !!

    Regards,
    Dhiren.

    Primary Tables:
    • Sales Header (Table 36) – for header-level data.
    • Sales Line (Table 37) – for line-level data.
These tables only allow you to load Shortcut Dimension 1 Code and Shortcut Dimension 2 Code directly.
Dimension Tables (Required for full dimension loading):
    • Dimension Set Entry (Table 480)
    • Sales Line Dimension (Table 355) – for line-specific dimensions.
    • Sales Header Dimension (Table 356) – for header-specific dimensions.
Important: You must load dimension values into Table 355 and 356 to fully apply dimensions beyond Shortcut 1 and 2.
     2. Is there any way to add other dimensions apart from shortcut dimensions one and two?
    Answer:
Yes, but not directly via Table 36 or 37. Here's how you can do it:
    Steps to Load Full Dimensions:
    1. Identify the Dimension Set ID:
      • Each combination of dimensions is stored as a Dimension Set ID in Table 480.
    2. Create Dimension Set Entries (Table 480):
      • Load all required dimensions (e.g., Department, Project, Region) into this table.
      • Each entry includes:
        • Dimension Code
        • Dimension Value Code
        • Dimension Set ID
    3. Assign Dimension Set ID to Header/Line:
      • In Table 36 (Sales Header) and Table 37 (Sales Line), populate the Dimension Set ID field with the correct ID from Table 480.
    4. Alternatively, load into:
      • Sales Header Dimension (Table 356) for header-level dimensions.
      • Sales Line Dimension (Table 355) for line-level dimensions.
⚠️ Note: You must ensure that the Dimension Set ID exists before assigning it to the header or line. Business Central does not auto-create dimension sets during config package import.
    Best Practice Tip:
    • Use RapidStart Services to export a sample Sales Order with dimensions.
    • Review how dimensions are stored across tables.
    • Replicate the structure in your configuration package.
Note: This response was created in collaboration with Microsoft Copilot to ensure clarity and completeness. I hope it helps to some extent.

When using Config Packages, tables 36 (Sales Header) and 37 (Sales Line) only let you import Shortcut Dimensions 1 & 2. To load full dimensions, you need to include table 480 (Dimension Set Entry) together with the document’s Dimension Set ID. That’s the correct way to bring in dimensions at both header and line level. If you need to import more than Shortcut 1 & 2, you must work through the Dimension Set Entry table.

    Hi Intima

The correct way to load dimensions on Sales Order headers and lines using configuration packages in Business Central involves the use of tables 36 (Sales Header) and 37 (Sales Line). However, these tables only allow loading of shortcut dimensions 1 and 2 directly. Typically, Sales Order headers and lines support these two shortcut dimensions, which can be loaded through a configuration package. While you have successfully loaded shortcut dimensions 1 and 2 on the Sales Lines, the same can be applied to the Sales Order header but only for these two shortcut dimensions using these tables. This is the standard behavior in Business Central when working with dimensions via configuration packages.

Regarding adding other dimensions beyond shortcut dimensions 1 and 2, Business Central does not support loading additional dimensions directly through these tables in configuration packages. To work with other dimensions apart from shortcut dimension 1 and 2, you would need to use customizations or development that handles the full dimension set or leverages additional methods such as APIs or extension code. In standard configuration package usage, only the two shortcut dimensions are available for import/export. Therefore, to load more than these two dimensions, advanced customization is necessary to map and update those dimensions on both the Sales Order header and lines.
