Licensing SQL server 2014 for use with Dynamics GP 2016

Hi all,

We've upgraded our GP and server to Win 2012R2, SQL Standard 2014 and GP 2016.  Now I need to take care of purchasing the SQL licenses.  We are registered for 13 full GP users, and 11 limited GP users.  I also run GPWeb on the same server.

What is the best (and cheapest) approach for licensing my SQL server?    I was thinking that I may need 1 server license plus 13 cals.. (but that would probably not cover my GPweb users). But now I saw that there is an SQL runtime license..  With the scenario I'm in, could I use it?  And what would I need to purchase?  Thanks for your help

I think that our old server was registered for 1 SQL server + 12 SQL cals..

    Zaza,

Microsoft licensing is very confusing and seems to be interpreted differently by every person you ask.  That being said I believe you need one SQL server instance license, 24 SQL user CALs for your thick client users, and an additional SQL CAL for each GP web client user that isn't covered by the 24 SQL user CALs.

It gets even more confusing when you start looking at High Availability deployment. When in doubt get your VAR involved so if (when) you are audited and Microsoft tries to ding you for a shortfall you can get them talking with the partner to sort out any confusion.

    Regards,

    Kirk

You can purchase SQL per CAL or per Processor.

SQL cals are per named user.

If you have any further questions on licensing, I would recommend speaking with our MBS Operations team who handles more the licensing side of Dynamics GP. You can reach them via these options:

    1. Initiate Chat with MBS Operations

        a. Initiate chat from Order Central or PartnerSource > Contact us

        b. Click the button for Chat Simple Query

        c. Chat with Microsoft

        d. Complete Captcha challenge

        e. Select your language preference

View the complete content on PartnerSource here: mbs.microsoft.com/.../IntroductionofNewLiveChatPlatform

    2. In CustomerSource, if you click on the ‘Support’ tab, then click on ‘eSupport’, it will take you to the Support page, where you can then click on ‘Get Operational Support for Pricing, Licensing & Ordering’.

This will direct you to an option to either open a query through CustomerSource or email your question to mbsorder@microsoft.com. To open a query, click ‘Ticket Complex Query and Manual Order’. This support is email based, however you can request for someone to call you to discuss your questions over the phone.

    3. In Partnersource, there is this link:

              mbs.microsoft.com/.../globaloperationssupportpage

    4. You can also go through PartnerSource and click on 'Support', then click on 'Get Operational Support for Pricing, Licensing & Ordering'. From there you can choose to chat or submit an inquiry.

    5. You can try using this direct email address for MBS Operations: mbsorder@microsoft.com

    Thanks
