Solomon running on Citrix?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We've been running Solomon on Citrix since version 6 all the way to SL2011. It seems like different verison of Solomon caused different problems. I've always installed Solomon client on citrix, and lots of time the sign on will crash at first attempt, it will finally show up with couple attempts. I was wondering should I install Solomon itself on citrix instead of client. Anyone has recommendation as what would be the best configuration for citrix environment (we have 3 citrix servers with load balance turned on installed with win2008R2).

Thanks in advance.

    RE: Solomon running on Citrix?

The way Solomon is architected (an exe for every piece and part) causes issues with the seamless app integration with Citrix. We attempted to deliver Solomon as a seamless app and ran into two issues. First, certificate revocation checking. This has more to do with us locking down our Citrix servers to keep users from browsing the web. However, once we opened that up we still had speed issues. The second issue we had could only be seen when tracing something using procmon. When a user does something like a heavy duty posting or some other heavy process in Solomon and it has to fire an EXE multiple times, Citrix has to build up and tear down the delivery mechanism each and every time it needs to deliver the screen to the user. Some batch processing screens or reporting screens can open and close and open and close and open and close multiple times depending on the type of batch you are posting, what that is being integrated to, etc. There is a lot of overhead there. We found that things just work that much faster when delivering it as a full desktop over Citrix and letting them click and run the application from there.

I think we are using seamless app. The user has to log on citrix first and then click on Solomon icon to start the SL. There is a batch file on the server which will do the drive mapping and launch SL when the user click on the SL icon. We only have few apps running on citrix and no in-house experts on this. With so many unknown citrix problems, we decided to install SL client to each users' pc and have them use citrix when they work remotely. This definitely relieve day-to-day headache, but still have some problems when running SL via citrix.

We are currently publishing a desktop but have run it only seamlessly (a long time ago) as well. The issue I had with seamless was that people didn't understand what machine they were running on. After explaining to people over and over I finally published a desktop and while people still have a hard time knowing where they are running they can answer the question "Are you using your first start button or your second?".

Are you delivering it via seamless app or are you delivering a desktop? We've found that delivering it seamless causes a bit of slowness and things perform better presenting a full desktop.

We have run several versions of SL (6,7,2015) on Citrix without issues. Initially we had done a full install on citrix so each machine stood alone and programs would load faster off the local drive instead of the file server. After several years where our BP made changes and failed to update each server we moved to where we have an SL "server" where the initial install and updates are applied to our File Server and run just he client install on Citrix. This way when a new exe is delivered it only needs to be updated in one place. This works OK for us and is no less stable than our local client installs.

    Hi Wang,

Running SL on a Citrix environment is not test and not supported. To find out the answer to your question you will have to test this and find which way works the best, or has the least amount of errors.

To find out if the issue is with Citrix or not you may want to take Citrix out of the equation and test, if it errors then it is not Citrix. But if there is no errors after taking Citrix out, then you know the issues are being caused by Citrix.
