Project Invoice number is generated with a P_ prefix rather than assigned number sequence format

We discovered that a number of project invoices were assigned a /strange/ invoice number all staring with a P_ and followed with a /random/ 4 or 5 digit number. I have read somewhere that this is a system generated number due to an error condition during the invoice creation process but can't find the details anymore. Anyone know what this condition is that causes these numbers to be created?

    As far as I know regarding auto-numbering there are three ways to customize it:
    1.Change in environment settings.
    2.The Number Sequences in D365 Finance and Operations.
    3.Use the Auto Number Manager tool for XrmToolBox.
     
    I'm not sure which method you're using, but if the P_ prefix has nothing to do with your customization,
    based on a database-related document I found, this error could be caused by duplicate numbering.
    Databases use the P_ prefix to avoid duplicate numbering.
