Restoring database for store after HD crash in HQ environment

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I am restoring a store after a harddrive crash. I have already learned the hard way why you don't use a local back up.  But, I a little confused about exporting the store database from HQ.  I have to select a template for the export.  But, if my pos is wiped out, how do I do that?  Can I create a database on the HQ server from a back up, or do I need to do something else?

Thanks

Bill

RE: Restoring database for store after HD crash in HQ environment

I should have thought this one through before posting LOL.  I created a template dbase using a backup and HQ Admin..  I then exported the store to a new database and closed out the open batch and settled the EDC.  The last time I restored a store from a store backup.  Huge mistake.  My journals were overwriting previous journals in hq,  This also meant that the detaile sales report in HQ was always wrong for this store.  I fixed all of that by using the export method and I then saw that I had two open batches several months apart.  Used the edit batches to close one and closed the latest one with the POS.  There were several old transactions in the EDC batch.  I used the SQL command to delete the erroneous ones .  I took the time to build new Harddrive with everything I use on a POS system including HQ client etc.. and then cloned the drive (prior to restoring the database).  I now have a complete store ready to install in my system in the case of a hardware failure.  It took hours because the harddrive failed competely,  It takes a couple of hours just to format and install Windows and then a couple of more hours to install all of the software, program codes, merchant info (not included in a regular backup) .  I will keep the harddrive off site along with my merchant info for each store.  I wil still make regular backups of my HQ etc..  I added this to my post in case anyone else has run into these problems.  My hardcopy of my merchant data was destroyed in a hurricane,  Last year the same store had a drive crash.  It took me over a week to get the correct info (V number etc.) from First Data.  It started out as Paymentech, then was sold to Chase, then First Data and now someone else.  When First Data bought the merchant services, they told me that they no longer had access to my account info.
