This is a difficult one to answer because mostly functional consultants push the technical people to restore database of TEST on production, and I always try to stand against that.

If you are using production already, you don’t want to mess-up with your production data. It is hard but one of the proper ways could be as folwling.

    1) Keep tracking (taking notes) of every change you do in your TEST server.

    2) Take all those areas which you marked at #1 and push data from test to production using DIXF. If changes are very less you can do those manually as well.

    Hi Sohaib

Thank you for your quick response,we had a doubt about the same , may be with the help of model management we thought we can achieve the data transfer of the configuration made in one environment to other.

can you just brief me about what exactly we can achieve with the help of the model management . pls give me the scenario in your explanation.

I am not sure about the term 'Model Management'

if that word is inspired by Model Store, that means you are referring to x++ models which contain code. transferring model from one server to other, will take development changes only and not any data.

For data import and export migration , you can check this link

    technet.microsoft.com/.../aa548629.aspx

You can import data from live via excel add-in and change connection to test and publish data to test environment

For how to use excel add-in,check this link

RE: Moving configuration from test to production server

Thank you for showing this screenshot. This is helpful. This makes me say that, my previous reply applies. If you will take model from one server to another it will take development changes (code) only. From your original question, my idea is that you want to migrate data changes from one server to other. Because when we say ‘Configuration’ this usually means parameters in AX.

Let’s forget your question for moment and here is the process which usually happens in organizations.

    1. Movement of Model store from ne server to other.

Model store contains all code of application. For example if a developer added a new field in one server and you want to see that new field in other server, Model store movement will make sure that your field is available in other server. A model store can have many models. You can move your development changes model by model or simply by moving Model store (model store has all models). I have seen usually and I myself prefer to move model store instead of model.

    2. Movement of configuration and master data from one server to other.

Unless you haven’t done the step#1, doing step number 2 can be wrong. This can result in failure. For example newly added field has not been moved to the new server and you are trying to push the data for that field. The system will show you errors that I don’t have the field. As first step, always make sure that your customizations are equal in both system. Next move your configuration and master data using DIXF or any method of your choice. Preferred ways are DIXF and Excel Add-in.

Be open and have your say please, what you want to do actually, so we can help you go with correct approach.

Thank you very much for your clear explanation.

I can understand to go forward with DIXF and Excel Add-in approach to move the data from test to production. I had an ambiguity of using Model Management to move the configuration between environments, which has been cleared now.
