Possible issue with Notes on Dynamics 365 CRM latest version?

Posted on by 4,257

I'm facing an issue on the new Dynamics 365 latest build that I'm not sure if it is a real issue or is it something on my side! Here is what I have:  a brand new CRM sandbox instance that I have reset to be built on version Dynamics 365. I create 1 custom entity called Test and I add only Notes to this entity - no activities, just notes.

I create a new record from entity Test and the record is created fine. Close this record and I try to reopen it, then I get the Notes section without the small rectangular area "Enter a note" which we use to create a new note! i.e. I cannot create a new note. I try to refresh the page few times but still doesn't show (except with IE after few times - read further below)

This is what I get:

While what I should get is this:

The error shows on all browsers: IE, Edge, Chrome and Firefox except that with IE, after I click refresh (F5) several times it works, and I get the "Enter a note" box. I usually need to click refresh at least 3 times for it to work with IE. With all other browsers, the problem persist and I cannot create a new note regardless of how many times I click refresh.

To minimise the cause of the issue, I tried this again on a new and different CRM instance which is also a sandbox Dynamics 365 that I have just reset and then add a simple new custom entity with notes only.

The workaround I found so far is that if you add activities to the entity, so that the entity has notes and activities, then the social pane shows fine with the correct Notes box to create new notes. However, any custom entity that only has notes, you cannot create a new note from any browser except IE if you click refresh few times. Also when you first create the entity, you can create a note first time. However, try to close this record and re-open it and the problem starts to appear.

Finally, to minimise any other cause, I tried to access both instances from a completely different computer and it is exactly the same behaviour as above.

Is anyone else having the same issue or heard of this being reported to Microsoft?

Any comments or feedback are much appreciated.

    It works fine for me .. Try it

    Edit line 118 in Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics CRM\CRMWeb\_static\css\1033\notesv2.css.aspx from color #0000 to #000

    CRMChromeNotes3.png

    I did this is. It worked. After clearing my Chrome Cache, I was able to see Notes in black text.

    #000 is a Web-Safe Color of Black

    #000000 is a X11 Color of Black

    I'm experiencing the same issue. Activated post configuration for the custom entity, no luck. After the record has been created, notes work fine, but once I leave the page and come back again, I cannot add any more notes.

    As for the fix for the on-premise version, there doesn't seem to be confirmation of this problem. Please see Microsoft Support here for an on-premise customer with the same issue:

    Hope this helps

    Hi Everyone,

    So here is the latest update on this issue. This issue should have now been resolved as part of Service Update 5 for Microsoft Dynamics 365 8.2.0 which has build number: 8.2.0.0788

    As per the update release notes, Service Update 5 resolves the following issue (amongst others):

    The Notes control does not respond when leaving the Task form.

    Here is a link to the service update:

    I solved this by adding the following CSS to the following file on our CRM server:

    File: <CRM Installation Directory>\CRMWeb\_static\css\1033\notesv2.css.aspx

    CSS to add:

    /* Custom CSS */
    .notesWall .header { display:block !important; }

    I've received info from our partner contact person, that fix for OnPremise is planed in Service Update 5 for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016 On-premise. Estimated release on mid April 2017

    To all On-Premise users don't count on a quick fix. We used On-Premise from version 3 to 2016 and found after version 2011 the fixes for On-Premise version where delayed by many months. Updates for On-Premise are very slow. A lot better when using Dynamics 365 Online.

    Workaround: Turn on Legacy Forms Rendering if your using On-Premise till Microsoft releases the Service Update for On-Premise

    That's the best advice I can give you.
