Possible issue with Notes on Dynamics 365 CRM latest version?

I'm facing an issue on the new Dynamics 365 latest build that I'm not sure if it is a real issue or is it something on my side! Here is what I have:  a brand new CRM sandbox instance that I have reset to be built on version Dynamics 365. I create 1 custom entity called Test and I add only Notes to this entity - no activities, just notes.

I create a new record from entity Test and the record is created fine. Close this record and I try to reopen it, then I get the Notes section without the small rectangular area "Enter a note" which we use to create a new note! i.e. I cannot create a new note. I try to refresh the page few times but still doesn't show (except with IE after few times - read further below)

This is what I get:

While what I should get is this:

The error shows on all browsers: IE, Edge, Chrome and Firefox except that with IE, after I click refresh (F5) several times it works, and I get the "Enter a note" box. I usually need to click refresh at least 3 times for it to work with IE. With all other browsers, the problem persist and I cannot create a new note regardless of how many times I click refresh.

To minimise the cause of the issue, I tried this again on a new and different CRM instance which is also a sandbox Dynamics 365 that I have just reset and then add a simple new custom entity with notes only.

The workaround I found so far is that if you add activities to the entity, so that the entity has notes and activities, then the social pane shows fine with the correct Notes box to create new notes. However, any custom entity that only has notes, you cannot create a new note from any browser except IE if you click refresh few times. Also when you first create the entity, you can create a note first time. However, try to close this record and re-open it and the problem starts to appear.

Finally, to minimise any other cause, I tried to access both instances from a completely different computer and it is exactly the same behaviour as above.

Is anyone else having the same issue or heard of this being reported to Microsoft?

Any comments or feedback are much appreciated.

    Hi Mohammed,  Created a Custom entity in Dynamics 365 (Build version 8.2.0.773) with Only Notes Enabled on the entity, I did not enable activities, it worked fine for me;

    Hi Raz,

Many thanks for trying to help. Could you please try with different browsers? Google Chrome for example? Also on IE, could you close the record and reopen it  couple of times?

    Thanks,

    Mohamed

Hi Mohammed I think your onto something. After trying to reopen the record I cant add another note.  So it lets me the first time but after the record has been closed it doesn't allow be to add another note when I reopen the record. This occurred in IE

Yes exactly. That's what I was getting. First time you create the record, it's fine. Close it and try to re-open it, the problem starts - you can't create notes. With IE, I tried to refresh many times and then it started to work again. With Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, refreshing doesn't bring back the "create a note" box (as screenshots above).

Thanks again for confirming - I spent hours thinking it's a problem with my migration from CRM Online 2016 SP1 solution to Dynamics 365 CRM Online - but it's not. It seems like a Dynamics 365 possible issue.

I'll probably try to raise this is an issue/bug at Microsoft Connect (pre-release) but not sure if this is the best route at this stage. If it is confirmed really as an issue, I would class it as a P1 bug.

if it's a bug you have in production and you have replicable steps, open a support ticket, connect is for pre-releases and insert there the bug can be missed.

    Hi Mohamed,

Have you already raised this as a bug with MS support? And if so, do they see this as a bug and will they fix it?

    Thanks.

    Hello Mohamed

Tenfold just recently added MS office to their integrations list. Tenfold offers features such as click to dial, automatic call logging, easy note taking and task creation, screen pops on inbound and outbound calls, new lead/contact creation when no matching records, support for cases/opportunities and advanced analytics on the backend. They also support MS Dynamics integration

We have reported this to Microsoft and raised a ticket for it. Was told it would be fixed in the next update.

Here is the bug in greater details and very well explained:

    https://community.dynamics.com/crm/b/dynamicscrmdevdownunder/archive/2017/01/16/bug-notes-creation-in-custom-entity

We also found it just doesn't effect Custom Entities but also effects the Case entity as well.

Let's hope for a quick fix to this one.

    Possible fix here: http://www.toplinestrategies.com/blogs/crm/dynamics-365-online-how-fix-broken-notes-control-custom-entity

Anticipating the Microsoft resolution to this.

    Dynamics 365 CRM version: 8.2.0.780

For entity forms that were created in an older instance of CRM that has been upgraded, some of the forms may have the <FormPresentation> value set to 0.  I can confirm changing that to 1 fixes the problem for entities that have both Notes and Activities enabled.

For entities that have just Notes enabled, it does not fix the issue.  <FormPresentation>1</FormPresentation> has no effect.

For new records, if you click save, and don't navigate away, you can add a note.  Once you navigate away and come back to that record, the box where you would enter a new note is missing.

    We're eagerly waiting a fix.
