How to track offcuts in the furniture manufacturing

Hello Experts,
 
We're implementing to a furniture manufacturing company and we are trying to see how we can track the offcuts that are left out after cutting the required sizes from the plyboards. 
 
To produce the furtnite, MDF boards(plyboards) of typical size (2.44mt x 1.22mt) are used which are generally maintained as pcs in the inventory. Depending on the furniture thats being made, required sizes are cut from the plyboard and some offcuts will be left out as they can't be used into the current production. These offcuts may be used later when there is a requirement for production of some small tables and charits etc.,
 
We're planning to use the BOMs and production orders for this manufacturing process. Trying to think of a best way on how these offcuts can be tracked in the inventory.
 
Want to understand the experiences from people who implemented to such industries. Appreciate your thoughts.

    Instead of using BOMs, if you use Formulas, you can create Production orders which can produce multiple different items. For example, a production order which creates the furniture item, as well as items representing off-cut shapes.
     
    If you want to handle these offcuts as items, which you can track in stock, and consume later on other production orders, this method might work for you.
     
    In F&O, this falls under what is known as 'Process Manufacturing'. This might be a good place to start:

    I agree with you that using process manufacturing would enable us to capture these offcuts as coproducts\by products. Main concern is these offcuts could be of different measurements and need to understand whats the best way of tracking these.
     
    (Ex; it wouldn't be sufficient to record as 1 pc of cut is produced rather the best way is 0.5 * 1 sq meter plyboard is available, additionally, what's the best way to locate and consume these in the next production orders)
     
    In order to use the batch orders(process manufacturing), we have some constraints but if we can achieve greater traceability of these offcuts, we can convince the client.
     
    Any experiences of other similar projects are much appreciated.

    How are you recording the uncut raw material boards, which I assume also have different measurements.

    Uncut raw materials come in standard sizes like (8ft*4ft) or another 3-4 different sizes. But the offcuts are left overs and could be of any sizes.
     
    At this stage, we are exploring few options.
    1. Each different offcuts left over from the production process to be captured as different batch and capture the measurements using batch attributes. They can look back in the inventory and see the sizes.
     
    2. Since the client is concerned of these offcuts are taken away by workers and they may sell in scrap, we are also thinking  to track them as Kgs. After production is finished, they cant report 2 kgs of plyboard left over. Warehouse workers are accountable to show the total weight that is left over.
     
    3. Try tracking the offcuts as catch weight items.
