Japanese Language Pack, Installation and Use

I am trying to install a Japanese Language Pack, in a test environment, to test the feasibility of extending access to a database, and entering / processing transactions using the Japanese Language while others use the same Company database and the currently installed English language.

I am not sure what you meant by install Japanese language pack because GP doesn't have Japanese version.  Are you referring to regional setting of Japan.  The other option is translating the GP application to Japanese using translation tool which will change all window and label into Japan language, if you do this you can have 2 separate instance of GP one English and one Japanese.

What our management hopes to see is that there will be a single company database, accessed by users in Japan and in the US.

For a User in Japan, they will enter and view the data in the Japanese language. The US Users will enter and view data in English.

If a Japanese User views data entered by the US Users, they will see the data in Japanese, and vice-versa.

Is that the situation that will be experienced with the regional translation tool? Is that translation applied at the client level or at the server level?

    Hi,

There will be two instances of GP, one with standard English where all your windows and labels will be in English and 2nd one will have translated Windows and labels on Japanese.   Based on what information you type in data based on regional setting into GP which will be common on both system since the data won't get translated.  So for example you can enter a purchase order on Japan instance and on comment ID you can enter any technical information in Japanese using the regional setting, but this information remain same when it's opened by US users.

When you say 'two instances of GP' I understand that to be two completely separate installations of Dynamics GP. I am asking about having a single instance of GP, but with two separate clients accessing that single instance. What is being sought is that no matter which client is used to enter transaction data, if a user on the other client runs reports or inquiries, the results will be in the regional language associated with their client. I don't think that is what will occur, but I want to make sure before I report that back to management. Thanks.

Japanese is a double byte language and is not supported by Dynamics GP.

That said I have seen some systems using double byte characters (for Chinese) in their data. I would recommend keeping all primary key fields in single byte.

Also, expect weird behaviour when deleting double byte characters or using them in text fields.

Please note that use of double byte characters is not supported by the Microsoft Support team and that it is at your own risk.
