Excel Report builder question with the command text

We have a report that everyone has a short cut to on their desktop.

One person wanted a certain field to be pulled in on their report (User Defined 1)

So I went in to the connections properties in the report and added the field into the "command text" field. It worked and changed it on only his report. So we dont have any problems, but I was just wondering why that worked. We were under the impression that all of our shortcuts point to the same odc and if you make changes to the properties, it would change it on all. Or is the command text within the report specifically for that report only?
