darn - I only have compiled html help files.
oh well - at least the triangle is gone from the window.
I do not, but if it is not compiled, you would be looking for a .hlp file extension.
hi Joshua
Do you know where the help file is located / what it is called? I have the "no longer supports" help utility installed and still get the there is no help for this window from F1.
As a side note, there is a help file for this. The help file is of an old format that is no longer supported in newer versions of Windows. I do believe there is a utility you can download from Microsoft that will update the system to view these legacy formats. Here is a link: support.microsoft.com/.../917607
and curiously, now that I have calculated a value for this account and go back to change it the triangle is gone.
whatever was being objected to has resolved itself?
boy I wish there was a context sensitive help for this screen so I could know what may have changed to remove the objection.
sadly no it did not.
Hi Joshua
Thanks for the reply.
When I enter JE's to accounts that are not using the full structure there are no warnings, or triangles.
I did ponder the 000000 fill for blank segments but the users felt that additional typing would be cumbersome. Aside from Dimension Sets and Value Dimension sets I have had no issues in GP or MR with blanks. Remember blanks are not really blanks they are spaces in GP now. So I have been able to include "blank" as a valid line on my trees.
You have our structure almost right. W=entity / location X = natural account Y = cost centre or type of product sold Z = actual product sold.
So balance sheet only needs W and X
Sales and COGS need W,X,Y, and Z
SGA needs W,X, and Y
I would disagree about bad design with blanks. I've used GP for 20 years and never had an issue with blanks. I will caveat that by saying blanks have to be at the end of an account structure. I would never have W, Blank,Y, Z.
can you click on the exclamation mark ? Would it give any further details ?
That's the only thing I can think of. Does that look like that when you enter GL transactions? How are your segments defined for the system? Are they 4 segments, and you use only 2? For consistency, you should have something in the segment to complete your account structure.
For example, if you use a WWW-XXXX-YYYYYY-ZZZZZ where: w = division, x = natural, y = product, and z = department, you may not have a product or a department for balance sheet accounts. For this, I would create a segment number using 000000 for "No Product", and 00000 for "Admin" or whatever makes sense for your business structure. The balance sheet versus P&L accounts should be defined in 1) the posting type in GP for smart lists, year-end close 2) the natural number should define the account's financial report (1xxx = assets, 2xxx = liabilities, etc..)
It would be generally bad design to have some accounts using all segments while others do not. You may also find that you limit yourself in financial reporting later if your account structure needs to grow with changes in your business.
Hi Joshua
My balance sheet only uses segment 1 and 2, the two blank segments are intentionally blank.
Are the blank segments why I got the yellow triangle?
