Expense breakdown - without adding new accounts

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

I recall seeing somewhere how you can have one GL account, say 'Travel Expense' and have a way to break that account down into details such as airfare, rental car, meals, etc without having to introduce additional complexity to your existing Chart of Accounts.  Can someone help point me in the right direction for information regarding this?  We are upgrading hopefully soon but right now are on GP 2010.  Many thanks!

RE: Expense breakdown - without adding new accounts

Analytical Accounting or Analysis Groups are the options. Analytical Accounting provides further powerful and complicated capabilities, although, it implies some sort of complexity over the financial processes in general such as Budgeting.  The analysis group is an old module which provides simple yet acceptable analytical capabilities, and has never had any enhancements since ages as the Analytical Accounting is the currently supported module

Here is a comprehensive article illustrating the capabilities of AA through a simple comparison between AA and the traditional GL segmentation Microsoft Dynamics GP Analytical Accounting Vs. Segments

    Your feedback is highly appreciated,

Analytical Accounting is the currently supported method for doing this type of analysis.

Not sure if a plug is allowed, but my second book has a chapter on Analytical Accounting covering setup, configuration, transaction entry and reporting: www.packtpub.com/.../microsoft-dynamics-gp-2013-financial-management
