Power BI to be embeded in project operation

(2) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 173
I’m working on a Power BI report that sources data from Dataverse (precisely form project operation). The data is expected to grow significantly over time (project tasks and time entries), and I want to ensure high performance and near real-time updates.

🔍 Key considerations:

* I’d like to avoid using the Dataverse connector directly, as large data volumes could lead to performance issues and timeouts.
* I'm currently considering Azure Synapse Link with DirectQuery, which offers near real-time refresh (\~5 minutes).

💡 Question to the community:
Are there any other approaches you'd recommend to maintain performance and achieve near real-time insights?

Your input would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Asmaa,

If you are planning to use Azure Synapse Link with DirectQuery then it has a direct dependency on the Dataverse. The dataverse functions as a platform for integration and storage. Synapse Link does support incremental updates and is able to handle heavy data loads. Once you are done setting up the Azure Synapse link link the tables to Fabric and those tables are exported into Fabric.
Once your data is in Fabric you can build your own lakehouse and have this data seamlessly integrated with PowerBI reporting.

Recommended and implemented this approach for a couple of analytical reports for one customer, using the documentation provided by the Fast Track team. It works pretty well.

     A few questions:
    1. Which tables from Project operations are you looking to bring into SYnapse link?
    2. Is Project transactions being considered here?

Hope this helps. Happy to answer questions, if any.

    Hello Navneeth,

Thank you for replying to my post, we are planing to use mainly the project, project tasks and resources tables,

For the suggested approach can we just use the azure synapse link with out using Fabric, is there an advantage using Fabric?

If we decided to go with Fabric does it require a specific license or extra azure resources?

And how does this approach coast? l have read that setting up azure data lake gen and synapse costs 5$ per TB

I have also read that Fabric could increase my Dataverse capacity utilization

If your are looking get away from Dataverse would say using Azure Data Factory (ADF) or Fabric Dataflows Gen2 or  Event-driven architecture using Azure Functions + Event Grid

    Thanks

    Hi Asmaa,

    Suggestions:
We are planing to use mainly the project, project tasks and resources tables.
A] Project tasks and resources will definitely have moderate load of transactions. One table that you might see heavy transactions could be Project transactions.

For the suggested approach can we just use the azure synapse link with out using Fabric, is there an advantage using Fabric?
A] You can continue using Azure Synapse link without using the Fabric link and still build out reports because the data sits on the Dataverse platform. The advantages of using Fabric in comparison to Synapse link depends on your requirements. Fabric link is an extension to the Azure Synapse link and it provides the below mentioned advantages (As higlighted below).

If we decided to go with Fabric does it require a specific license or extra azure resources?
A] You definitely need a storage account for publishing the tables from D365 FO but would recommend reaching out to the licensing team with reference to licensing costs for extra azure resources.

And how does this approach coast? l have read that setting up azure data lake gen and synapse costs 5$ per TB.
A] For Azure Data Flow Gen2 there is an additional cost involved.

I have also read that Fabric could increase my Dataverse capacity utilization.
A] Dataverse utilization will consume space on the dataverse environments DB because there will be transactional or master data flowing through Dataverse hosted tables.

I prefer to use Datflow rather than Azure Synapse  if you want to be easy, not complex, the only issue is that it will not be real-time; you will need to refresh every time the reports
