Removing unused custom fields, tables, scripts

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Along the way toward our first implementation of GP at our company we have created several fields, forms, scripts  that have ended up not being used in our final set to release.

We've replaced all of them with better versions , but kept them around ...just in case.

Now that we are well on our way and have better examples in our collection, I'd like to get rid of the unused ones. Is there some report or some way to identify these objects that are no longer used?

Check the data in the tables? Do you have a last modified date field?

As I mentioned you can use GPPT’s Security Activity Tracking to log if anyone uses your custom windows over a period of time.

    Thanks Beat,

That makes sense for Forms, the ones. I am a fan of Notepad++ and the Compare plugin. The fields are more my concern. I don't want to remove any that are used in a table or form, but I know there are quite a few that are not used.

    Hi David,

The customizations were all done in Dexterity. they are just custom tables, forms, fields etc. Not modifications to anything Dynamics,. No alternate forms or reports. I'll give GP power tools a try. WE own it and it is a great tool to have. Knowing the fields used in windows would help.

    Hi Erick,

not really.. you need to compare visually the reports in Report Writer (or the Forms) ..

If you're not sure which ones is good or not, Export the the customized Forms/Reports into a .package file and open that up with a notepad++ editor. Than you can compare both versions side-by-side (NPP has a nice compare plugin).

Export the customization on a one-by-one basis, not all into the same package file..

Main Menu > Tools > Customize > Customization Maintenance > Export

    Hi Erick

What tools were the customisations created in?

There is really no tracking if a particular customisation is used.

With GP Power Tools Security Activity tracking you could see which windows have been used, but that is only going to help with entire custom forms.

You can't tell which fields on window is being used without setting up triggers to monitor each custom field.... Which GP Power Tools can do.

    Hope this helps

    David
