SSL Certificate greyed out in web client install, can't even select the drop down

Posted on by 1,730

The SSL Certificate selection in the web client install is greyed out.    It was working before, I just got a new SSL certificate because the old one expired, so I created the self signed cert in IIS, went to bindings and removed the old cert and added the new one.   I restarted everything.  Went to repair web client, and the box to select a cert is greyed out and there is no cert currently listed in that box.

I checked in certificate manager for the "computer" account, and it shows the new cert I created both in personal and trusted.

How can I get the web client to recognize and install the new cert?

    Hello Rob,

The one year expiration is why we actually only recommend using self-signed certificates for demo purposes, not for an actual production environment of Web Client.

For production environments, if not using a third-party certificate, the other option is to create a certificate through Certificate Authority on the domain, which you can setup to not expire for 3-5 years or so.

Just an option to consider so you're not having to run a Repair or Reinstall of Web Client every year when the self-signed certificate expires.

    Thank you,

I removed and reinstalled the web client.   As Derek suggested, I did a custom install this time.  I'm not sure if that will help in 1 year when it needs to be renewed again, hopefully it does.

You need to remove and reinstall the web client OR if you're familiar with the netsh command prompt utility to rebind the certificates to each of the ports you previously bound them to. To identify the ports being used by your current certificate, you can run the following statement, netsh http show sslcert. Before you do that, I would suggest you check your URL reservations, netsh http show urlacl.

By this time, you probably would agree that removing and reinstalling the web client is the easiest way.

    Hi Derek,

Thank you for your response.  It is a self-signed certificate, so do I still need to add it to 3rd party?  If the "custom" install was not used, there is no way to go back and add a new SSL certificate? Do I need to completely remove and reinstall the web client?

  • RE: SSL Certificate greyed out in web client install, can't even select the drop down

Most likely, the options being grayed-out when you ran the Repair was because when the install was done, a 'Single-Machine' install was chosen instead of 'Custom' which we recommend using, even when it's a single server install.

If it is a third-party certificate, verify that it's also added to the 'Third-Party Root Certification Authorities' under Certificates (Local Computer) in MMC.

    Thanks
