Changes to Unit of Measurement Schedule

Posted on by

How much flexibility do I have in changing the Unit of Measurement schedule?

1. I need to make our selling UofM's conform to the ANSI X-12 standards in order to implement EDI. Currently they are specific to the customer and sometimes even specific to the product.

2. I want to change our base UofM's for sold products to be uniform. Ideally I would like them all to be LB, currently they consist of CS, EA, BOX, etc.

    Thank you.

    Knowing that GP can make the following connections if it is provided sufficient information is good to know.

    Further explanation can be illustrated in the example below;

    Current UOM Schedule: X

    Base UOM: box

    Case024 = 24 box

    New UOM Schedule : New X

    Base UOM: box

    Case06 = 6 Box

    Case024 = 24 box

    The modification in the example above is correct and will result with no errors since changes have been well applied considering the historical transactions.

    Great comment. As I have read more posts on the subject I agree with your suggestion. The base U of M isn't so much an issue as the selling U of M. I appreciate your specific answer to this question. Also, this was the change I figured would be a potential problem.

    Do you have any comments or suggestions as I work on changing our selling UofMs to the ANSI-X12 standards?

    We work in a MEM environment where one of our entities has CS for all selling UofMS and other entities have a variety of selling UofMs. All of the test EDI's that I have seen so far ask for CA's of products, which is an easy conversion from CA to CS. For the entities that have a variety of selling UofMs I have made sure that CS is also on the UofM schedule and price list so that I can at least import the PO and once it's there I hard-code the values to the specific selling UofM

    Before tackling the issue of point 1. I wanted to comment on point 2.

    The issue of conformity is a strange one in the UofM world.  Unless all of the items that you sell, you sell by the LB it does not make sense to change everything to LB.  So the first question is "Do you sell / buy / consume in manufacture / assembly, all your inentory items by the LB?"

    If YES - then go for it and start the process of converting the UofM for all items to LB, but if you dont, then my suggestion is not to force all the items in your system to conform to one UofM standard.

    Just my first thoughts when I read your posting.  Not that there is a problem, but, be sure it is what you need and want before you start the massive undertaking.
