AX Dynamics 2012 R3 VM Installation

Folks,

I am trying to install AX Dynamics 2012 R3 VM image. I am having issues installing it though, I have 2 VHDs, one comes with the OS and the other comes as data.

I mounted the OS machine to virtualbox and it seems to be working fine. Problem arises when I try enabling the SQL Server service. When I try enabling the service it gets terminated without starting and I can't enable AX service as it has a dependency to SQL.

I just have the OS VHD, the data VHD is not mounted, it is not a windows VHD, it has some database files. I suppose the second VHD (data) has to do something with the SQL Service on the OS that is not starting, can you please share your experiences.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi axnovice,

Have you tried running the VHD on hyper-V ?

It is a less complicated method when you do that. If you are running windows 8 professional, you should have hyper-v already.

You can enable it and just import the VHD unless there is a special reason you need to use Virtualbox.

    Hello axnovice!

Is this a Microsoft Virtual Machine or a VM created by someone else?

Franco,It is a 90 day Microsoft trial VM.

Hakim, I tried using Hyper V, I have Windows Server 2008 R2 as my host OS. For some reason the same VM did not work on Hyper V and regardless if I use Hyper V I would still need the second VHD and connecting them together is a bit of an issue.

The only blog that I came across on AX 2012 R3 VM was this one:

Isn't it Generation 2 virtual machine? That wouldn't work on Windows Server 2008. Check system requirements for the VM to be sure.

Knowing more that "VM did not work on Hyper V" could help with identification of the problem.

Thanks Martin. I didn't notice generation VM is required for AX Dynamics 2012 R3. The blog I mentioned in my previous comment was using Windows 7, I thought it should be compatible with Windows 2008 R2 if it works with Windows 7.

I am not too familiar with generation 2, how would you plug in the second data VHD? just mount it to another instance of a new VM or 2 VHDs mounted to one VM?

Add the Data VHD to the VM using a SCSI Controller. In the VM, map the Data disk to E:

And then reboot the VM.. probably.

Thanks GuyUK, will try that. You don't have generation 2 VM  as suggested by Martin?

No, I have the R3 'Solution Demo Package' (which is the only one I know of that has been provided by Microsoft). It is Generation 1.

I did not notice you were using VirtuaBox. There are several web pages about running Dynamics AX 2012 VM on Oracle VirtuaBox. Google for some. Although they are probably referring to older VMs (R2 perhaps) you will see the principle is the same; add additional VHDs as hard disks.

You'll also read about setting IP addresses. One advantage of using Hyper-V is that you don't have to worry about this.

Oh, and I'm finding you'll probably need to give the VM at least 12GB of RAM (and ideally run it off an SSD hard disk).

    Hi GuyUK,

I tried adding the data VHD using a SCSI control, Virtual box is not liking it.  You want the SCSI controller to be added to the VM that has the OS VHD, right?

I have ample RAM and yes I am running this on an SSD.

    Thanks

Yes, you need to add the data vhd to the same VM as the OS vhd - as a second drive. Just use whatever method you can in virtual box to get a second drive added. Did you search to see how it was done in any of the walkthroughs that exist for doing this with the R2 VM?
