Relation between Activity Dates and Item Requirement Required date for Master Planning

Hi,

We are trying to find out what is the relation between WBS activities and master planning. The point is we should demonstrate the importance of keeping the activities dates in WBS up to date for getting the correct item requirement dates. We know that while creating a new item in item requirement we can assign the relevant activity to each item line. But required date is not changing according to activity start date. I appreciate if anyone can share any article or knowledge about interaction between WBS, project activity dates and master planning.

Regards,

Hasti

    Hi Hasti,

In your scenario, are you changing the activity dates after adding item requirements?

If you add item requirement after setting up WBS activities, the item requirement line will have the correct dates. If you then change the activity date and re-publish the WBS, it doesn't update the item requirement line (and respective sales order).

Hi Matthew. Thanks for your reply. Yes, that's true. My understanding is that there is no link between WBS activity date and item required date after first export. Same is applicable while an item future date is generated by master planning, Revised schedule date can not be reflected to WBS activity date to enable us to see the current updated project completion date. As I understood, from scheduling point of view, WBS activities are being used just for setting baseline required date for the item. Now if we want to see where we are in the project, we can't use WBS anymore unless we update it manually. is it true?

And one more question, is the same applicable for other resources like manpower allocation? It means assigned resources will be distributed based on activity duration for the first time and during the project life cycle, any change in duration of activity will not affect the recourse requirement due to lack of link between activities & Hour estimates? is there any way to use WBS for updating the new required hours?

    Hi Hasti,

I am not aware of a way to have changes to the WBS automatically update item requirement dates. A few options would be; to update the item requirement line manually, to delete the item requirement line and then transfer requirements from new WBS.

In terms of manpower resourcing I'm afraid I can't answer that without looking into it further, perhaps best to either test scenarios yourself (in test environment) or request help from rest of community.

    Regards,

    Matt
