Using Table Import in Inventory Control

Posted on by 1,970

we have a large number of items to transfer from one site id to another. i recently learned about the table import tool and i'm wondering if it is possible to use this for the mass transfer. I'd like to enter  the header information on the transfer entry window and then import the line data, which is currently in Excel. has anyone done anything like this?

I tried Table Import in our Test company (before I had a response on here) and it didn't work anyway. After reading the posts, I tried the mail merge, which ended up working great. It took a bit to tweak it so it would scroll down past the first five entries and keep going, but I think we will be able to use this tool for similar things in the very near future. Thanks so much for suggesting it and forwarding the link to the article. By the way, I'm not sure if what I did to change the macro would be the suggested way to do it. I ended up putting a line in after the data for line five to have it scroll down and then I changed the line numbers for the remaining lines all to line 5. I figured out how to do this by creating a macro based on entering more than 5 lines of data. Do any of you know if there is more instruction available somewhere on how to have it scroll down or maybe other tips/tricks when using it?

Thanks again. I'm really excited to learn about this tool.

You are also going to miss posting histories of transactions that will be used to recalculate the on hand quantities when you run a reconcile.  DON'T USE TABLE IMPORT FOR THIS!

A mail merge macro can be written that will build a transfer transaction or you can import via Integration Manager a transaction into inventory to move the data.  Posting this transaction will build all the history records you will need.

Frank is right. The table import is somewhat like importing data using SQL scripts which is not a recommended method. You need to be familiar with GP table structure for using it.

    Hi Sharon,

Table import would not be a good option for making inventory transfers.  You'd be able to increment the quantities in the destination site with table import but not decrement the quantities in the source site.

You might consider using a Mail Merge Macro to do the transfer.  Have a look at David Musgrave's excellent article on the MMM here - blogs.msdn.com/.../how-to-use-word-mail-merge-and-macros-to-import-data.aspx.  I've used it before to create mass transactions and it works great.

    Hope this helps,
