Upgrading Dynamics GP 2016R2 to 2018R2 Error: Product 3258 does not support upgrading from version 16.0.771.

Hello

I currently testing an upgrade from Dynamics GP 2016R2 to 2018R2. When I ran the installer I originally received a slew of errors similar to this one:

Error: Product 3258 does not support upgrading from version 16.0.771.

This same error presented on almost every component I had. After doing some research I discovered I needed a hot fix applied. Once I applied the fix the errors went away for every component but one, 3258 Encumbrance Management. I just cant seem to figure out how to get this to an acceptable version. If I uninstall the component GP seems to be working. I tried reinstalling it but it made no difference. 

I applied these two hot fixes:

MicrosoftDynamicsGP18-KB4468818-ENU.msp

MicrosoftDynamicsGP18-KB4486390-ENU.msp

    Return to thr GP 2016 R2 installtion and add encumbrance management. Launch GP Utilities and it should upgrade the Encumbrance MANAGeMENT module.

    I tried to reinstall Encumbrance Management from the 2016 installer but when running the utility it threw a ton of errors for the other components and failed. I think it is angry because I am on version 18 now.

    I then tried removing all the components I could from the 2016R2 install and left only Encumbrance Management. This also failed.

    Is there a way to somehow manually update this one component?

    Do you have the GP 2016 R2 running successfully someplace? We need to find out what else was not upgraded.  Can you dump the content of DU0000020 and DB_Upgrade in the Dynamics database into an Excel Spreadsheet plus a copy of your GP 2018 R2 DYNaMICS.SET and copy them here so we can see what was installed?

    The 2016R2 install no longer works as I upgraded to 2018R2. This was an all in one machine (notwithstanding SQL which is separate). It appears as if the component was upgraded the day I did my upgrade but is still on version 16. See below. Sorry for the wall of text. I didnt see where to add an attachment.

    I can see why this upgrade is having issues. You have several products at different versions. Do you have a reseller who can help with this? This is going to take some doing.

    I think the only piece that is being used is Encumbrance Management. The others are not listed to be upgraded and are not referenced in my error log.

    One of the suggestions I found was to remove Encumbrance Management from the database and re-add it. The following steps didnt work but I see how in principle it could. Perhaps a better version of the steps below would help.

    --DELETE DYNAMICS..DB_Upgrade WHERE PRODID=3258

    --DELETE DYNAMICS..DU000030 WHERE PRODID=3258

    --DELETE DYNAMICS..DU000020 WHERE PRODID=3258

    --DROP TABLE ENC10110

    We also have Microsoft support but am using that as a last resort.

    Critical Upgrade Notes

    1. Obtaining your Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 Registration Keys!!

    Microsoft Dynamics GP Business Ready Licensing (BRL) or Module Based Licensing (MBL) Customers, current on their service plan, must contact their Partner to request their Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018 registration keys. Registration keys will not be visible in CustomerSource until an order has been placed and completed for Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018.

    Microsoft Dynamics GP Perpetual Customers, current on their service plan, will automatically have their PartnerSource Business Center (PSBC) account and license keys upgraded to Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018.

    2. If you notice Payables Document attachments missing.

    3. Management Reporter 2012 CU16 is compatible with Microsoft Dynamics GP 2018

    4. If you are upgrading from Dynamics GP 2013 or Dynamics GP 2015 prior to build 14.00.0898 and going to latest build of Dynamics GP 2015 or later, you may run into an upgrade error 70 or 135 on the PM30200 table.  It is recommended to upgrade to 14.00.0898, then upgrade to latest version from this point.  If you still have issues with the update, please create a support case.

    5. If you apply the Dynamics GP 2016 February Hotfix and you are using VAT (3096) or Encumbrance (3258) you cannot upgrade to GP 2018 till 2019 mid-year releases (June 2019)

    I take it then you had applied the GP 2016 Hotfix? I though you had said you were on GP 2016 R2? There are other products in there that need correction.

    Ran into this today during a test upgrade. I changed the build for product 3258 from 771 to 552 for all companies and DYNAMICS in the DU000020 and DB_Upgrade tables and was able to proceed with the upgrade. Everything seems to be OK at this stage, but I would not do this for the production upgrade, of course. In my case, 2016 was an interim step to get to 2018, so I've already uninstalled and reinstalled 2016 at as an older build.
