I want to create an event management solution to let the customers choose an event through the Portal which they may have to pay for.
Does anyone know if there is suffiecient customization possibilities allowing to integrate payment services to the Portal add-on?

Within the portal there are not enough customizations options available. I've seen a concept from https://www.adoxio.com/ where they built a companion website and make sure that the portal and the companion website share the same authentication. That opens possibilities to do whatever you need. It is however, a workaround to the lack of development options for the OOB portal.
You can also go for the self hosted version. There you have all the options that you want.
