Sub-assembly added to Manufacturing Order picklist becomes phantom

Hi, I've been observing that some sub-assemblies, when added to a picklist of a released Manufacturing Order, become phantom. The BOM for these is identified as Regular, not Phantom. Other sub-assemblies do not become Phantom.

I have tried to compare the Cards>Inventory>Item screen (including item Resource Planning and Item Engineering Data) as well as Cards>Manufacturing>Bill of Material screen, but they appear identical.

If this sub-assembly is added to the BOM, then it appears as regular in the picklist. But if it is added manually to the picklist (even same MO as the one where the BOM is used), it becomes phantom.

The current workaround I have is to run an SQL query to change phantom_i from 1 to 0 in PK010033, but am not too happy having to do this frequently. What could be the corrective solution? What can I check/correct?

Thanks a ton Trevor, I tried it out in the test environment and it was successful. Even when I added it to the same MO that had it showing as Phantom earlier, it accepted and is not Phantom after changing the type of the 5 Arch. BOMs.

Before I do this in the live environment, a few more questions:

    1. Why change the Arch BOM back to Phantom? This (and similar) sub-assembly is regularly added to multiple MOs to account for variance in consumption during production. Can I leave them all as regular?

    2. Is there a way to change the types of all Arch BOMs to Regular where the MFG BOM type is regular? Maybe through SQL?

    3. Would it be OK to delete such Arch BOM? Again, can it be done through SQL?

    4. What could be the fix and how do I go about getting it?

    Thanks again,

    -J

Go to the 5 Arch BOMs and change the subassemblies from phantom to regular, then add to your picklist.  Then change your arch boms back to phantom.  That's what we did for about 6 months while we waited on the fix from Microsoft.  -Trevor

    Hi Trevor,

I checked: No Eng BOM, No Config BOM, No Super BOM.

But I did find 20 Arch. BOMs, with 5 of those Phantom and the rest Regular.

Could this be causing the problem? How can I correct this?

This problem seems to occur in a series of similar sub-assemblies. So I checked another sub-assembly from the same series which also demonstrates this problem. No Eng. BOM, No Config BOM, No Super BOM. 18 Arch. BOMs, with 5 Phantom.

When I checked another sub-assembly from a series that does not have this problem, there are no Arch. BOMs for that one, all else being similar.

Using GP 10.00.1634. Not sure which SP.

    Hello J-R,

Do you use an engineering version of the BOM as well that might be phantom?  There is a bug in GP (that has been corrected in the latest service pack) that uses the phantom version of the BOM if it exists regardless of which version you add to the picklist.  It might be as simple as loading the latest service pack, depending on the version and SP you're currently on.  For GP2010, I think it was fixed in SP3.
