One of our client is on AX4.0 and is looking to upgrade to AX2009. Can we get AX2009 licenses from Microsoft?
Hi Ravinderhsdyn,
Like mentioned, AX2009 is not an option anymore. Microsoft is not providing new licenses on this product. I'm aware of the extended support, but I'm not recommending to use this period as Microsoft will not provide new features for accounting regulations.
Hello Ravinderhsdyn,
If there is no budget for a D365FO upgrade then why don't you stay on AX4?
An upgrade to AX2009 won't help you much apart from the fact that you will get mandatory legally required new features.
If you don't expect considerable legal / accounting changes in the next years then an upgrade to AX2009 does not seem to make much sense.
Not to forget, you can design and implement new functionalities yourself if there are some new legal requirements coming up.
Best regards,
Ludwig
Thank you for your response Andre. Microsoft has extended the support for AX2009 SP1 till 2021 and our client doesn't have budget/infra for AX2012 or D365 implementations. If we are able to upgrade to AX2009 they will have extended support till 2021.

That is why we are exploring the option to upgrade to AX2009.
Hi Ravinderhsdyn,
As mentioned, AX2009 licenses are not available anymore for upgrade. Anyway, it would be recommended to upgrade to a supported version as both AX2009 and AX4 are not supported anymore. Supported are AX 2012 R3 and Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations. I would suggest to directly invest in the last mentioned as this is the most current application and has a lot of new features and technologies to support customers with their daily operations.
Hi Ravinderhsdyn,
You cannot get AX 2009 license anymore from Microsoft so it would be better to upgrade to AX 2012.
Please check the below MS docs on upgrade to AX 2012:
docs.microsoft.com/.../upgrade-to-microsoft-dynamics-ax-2012
I also suggest you to discuss with your Microsoft partner to help you out in this to initiate a discussion with MS directly and discuss multiple options.
Hi Ravinderhsdyn ,
It is recommended that you upgrade to AX2012 R3 or D365FO.
Go through this thread to gett more information: https://community.dynamics.com/ax/f/microsoft-dynamics-ax-forum/196824/dynamics-ax-2009---license-purchase
It is not possible anymore to get new AX 2009 licenses. Only existing licenses can be expanded with modules and concurrent users.
Microsoft is only selling AX 2012 and the new Microsoft Dynamics AX licenses.
