GP Printing frustrations

(0) ShareShare
ReportReport
Posted on by 100

We moved to full Dynamics GP accounting about nine months ago.  One of our bigger frustrations with GP is the necessity to choose the printer before printing a report.  This is totally opposite of any other software we have used in the past. If the correct printer isn't selected, you are pretty much sol and have to rerun the report.  The "Named Printers" feature has helped some, but most of our users print reports to multiple printers at multiple branches. Is there something we are missing or a third-party add-on that might ease the situation?  It amazes me that a Microsoft product doesn't use the standard Windows printing dialogue that most other software uses.

Thanks

Dean

    Hi Dean

Changing the printer once the report has printed to the screen is too late.

The printer driver settings are used to generate the report and so the screen output is already "locked" to the specific printer.

You need to select the printer before asking the report to generate.

Also, you might find that you are not using Named Printers in the best fashion for your needs.  You can specify a printer task to use a specific printer mode, but then cancel the select of the Printer ID.  This will then make the system ask for the printer ID interactively at the time of printing, this can be more efficient that using Manual Selection.

This article can also help explain how to use System Series and Company series default printer tasks.

Let me know if you have questions..... As the original developer of Named Printers, I should be able to help.

    Thanks alot.

In the named printer screen, if you select the Financial Series (for instance), then you can assign "Manual selection type" for the different tasks that needs to be printed on different printers/locations. When this choice is elected, the system will pop up the printer selection window and will take your choice into consideration.

(This choice doesnt seem to be available at system or company level)

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong then, because when I print to screen I can change the printer in the screen output screen but no matter what I change it to, it still prints to whatever printer was selected at the time the report was run(doesn't make much sense to me).

    Thanks

    Dean,

This might not be the solution you are looking for but might be used as a work around.Print the report to screen and then in the File menu, Print Setup you should be able to select any defined printer.
