SQL Backup Question

Posted on by 22,647

Ok, I have been doing this to long to spend time - wasting my time - trying to figure out what is happening with SQL.

So, here are pictures of the screens:

Tom thanks for this - I am going to work on this over the weekend when the client site is not busy.

I will post results and questions as they come up.

Derek, I was just going to do that this morning - but ran into time issue.  I will post there when I have some time.

    Hello Bill,

I was just going to add, if you don't find the answer to your issue with the SQL backup/maintenance plan here, I would recommend maybe posting this question on the Microsoft SQL Server forums, since it is more a SQL question then Dynamics GP, you may find additional information there, as the SQL Support monitor their forums just as we do here on our Dynamics GP forums.

    Thanks,

    RE: SQL Backup Question

The maintenance plans are just SSIS packages. You'll want to call each package as a separate step in the job. The screen below is for one step so you'll just need to add another step that calls the cleanup package.

If you're combining the cleanup and backup in the same maintenance plan and then executing that maintenance plan with one step there might be an issue with your maintenance plan itself. An easy fix would be to just create two separate maintenance plans and then call each one as different steps in the job.

Hopefully that made sense, I might have overused the word step and maintenance plan :).

Did you build the backup and cleanup as separate maintenance plans? If so add a new step in the job that calls the cleanup maintenance package

    RE: SQL Backup Question

Sorry failed is the wrong word to use - what happens is that the Clean Up task simple does not run - or if it does run - it does not do the expected task.

If run separately, it works just fine.

Bill if it's failing when you the job runs, the error should be logged in the Job Activity Monitor. What does it say there?

Open the Job Activity Monitor, find the job that failed, right click it and view history, from there you should see the cause for the error you're receiving.

    Kirk / Tom

Sorry about the question - I thougth I had pasted my notes I had with the picutres, but I did not.

Tom you are correct the attempt here is to link a Backup Maintenance and a Cleanup Maintenance into one Plan.

Currently I am able to have the two plans run independantly - but when I try to join the two the Clean Up fails - the backup always works.

It is not a big issue as the two scheduled events work just fine - it is just that in the past I am sure I had them both built into one event.

    Any suggestions?

Are you trying to schedule a job that has multiple steps, one to backup your db's and another step that cleans up your history??
