Email Tracking Tokens / Smart Matching / Changing Settings

Hello good folk of Dynamics.

I have a question regarding the Email tracking (Smart Matching and Tracking Tokens).

Currently, we have a live system with 10,000s of emails. I've noticed that in the email tracking settings we have currently set:

Number of Digits for user numbers: 10

Number of digits for incremental message counter: 3

I'm pretty sure this is the wrong way around. What's happening is the incremental counter for a user is rolling around every 999 emails for each user.

So, its easy to swap these numbers around, but won't this (potentially) cause chaos to existing emails tracking tokens? I'll make myself more than unpopular if I make a change and all of a sudden emails start appearing on the wrong cases, contacts, etc.

I'm also looking to turn off smart matching, as we believe it to be a bit "hit and miss".

So the questions I need answering before I make any changes are:

1) Is it safe to change the number for digits for users and the incremental message counter. (and...Are You Sure?)

2) Is is safe to turn off smart matching (I think so, but this is a live system, I want to be sure).

Any thoughts on the above 2 questions would be appreciated :)

    Hi,

    Thank you for your query.

Do you have more than 999 emails in a thread? If yes, feel free to increase it.

Secondly, when you turn the Smart Matching off, the system will not co-relate the emails (based on subjects etc.). If this suits your requirement, turn it off.

To go one small step from where Wahaj Rashid left off (but I think its what he meant), I wouldn't try to "switch" the parameters.  Just increase the users beyond 3 digits.  Obviously backup prod and copy prod to SBX and test, test, test.

Thanks for the replies. I think you mean increase the incremental count beyond 3 digits (seems very small to me!) and as you say, test test test! :)

Probably the best thing would be to increase the incremental counter from 3 to say, 8. I would hope the system would recognize the "old" email tokens and they would continue to work, as well as the new longer token.
