Item \ Part Revision Control

Posted on by 40

Help Help Help Help !!!

 Hello,

I`m working in a manufacturing company, and we are doing an implementation on GP.  One of the issues we are having is how do we track revision on items \ parts.

The reason its important is we need to track which revision \ version of a part was sent to our customers in case we need to-do a recall.  I can see the BOM`s have revision history.

But I`m looking for some guidance how other company`s do this with parts ???

 Regards,

Scott

There is a revision control component, however it only tracks the reasons for the revision, what was changed on the BOM, and the date of the revision.  It does not record which version was sent to which customer.  You can, as Dan suggested, use lots (tie each lot to an MO, the MO has the production date, and the production date ties to the revision control component).

Thanks Dan for replying, I was begining to think I was the only one !!

I was planning on using the Lot number entry, but the issue I see with this is that it would only entered on recieving the items.  This worries me as would possibly like to have this informaiton on our PO`s i.e. when we are submitting the order.

Would appricate if you would contact me.

Scott, there is not an ideal way out of the box to handle this.    Is your inventory lot numbered?  If so, that would be a way by incorporating the revision into the lot number.   Other than that, there is a revision field on the item engineering table that in the past we have used a trigger or stored procedure to populate a field in SOP to store and search for reporting.  Another way would be to use Extender if you own that.   You could attach it to the line item detail window.  This requires the purchase of Extender but is probably the best way with out customization.  For what it is worth, Smartlist Builder would be a great add-on with Mfg as it makes reporting so much more flexible.

I hope this helps out and for what its' worth, we do consulting for GP Mfg if needed.
