Problems with AX 2012 R3 Hyper-v demo environment performance

Hi,

Originally I installed the demo environment and it actually worked quite nicely with only 8 GB allocated RAM. But then I screawed the Network setups and decided to recreate the VM. Now, I've done it three times and the environment is extremely slow. I don't know what I did differently for the first time, but currently it's unuseable. I have even allocated more memory...about 10 GB now, with no improvements. AX doesn't start at all etc.

When you installed the VM, what were your steps doing it? I used 'Import Virtual Machine'. What import type did you use? Any other tips?

I give it 12GB, and see no performance issues. Running it on an SSD drive helps. Import Virtual Machine is correct way to do it. Use the top option (Register).

When you say AX doesn't start, what errors do you see in the Event Viewer?

    Hi Migi,

Older versions of the Demo solution worked indeed quite OK with less memory. I agree with Guy that 12GB or more is recommended.

There are some how-to documents on customersource and partnersource with will help you increasing performance. You can find direct links in my blog: community.dynamics.com/.../updates-on-the-ax-2012-solution-demo-pages.aspx

In addition, if you don't care about search indexing it will be possible to disable the sharepoint search and timer services. This will really help a lot.

OK, thanks for answers. I allocated memory up to 12 Gb and now it's manageable. Now there's only one strange feature left. When connect to the guest and login, the system asks me about the screen resolution and after that I need to login again. Any ideas why this happens?

    Hi Migi,

That feature is related to the Hyper V Virtual Machine Connection software. You don't have to use this to connect to the VM. You should find that a normal Remote Desktop session to IP address 10.20.12.4 works. I prefer this, because you can log in as different users simultaneously (useful for demos).

For performance, I forgot to mention the VM Profiler. You can use it to set a 'Minimal' startup, with many of the Retail services disabled. Obviously, don't do that if you're playing with the retail functionality. In the VM itself, hit Start and type 'VM Profile Manager'. On the 'Settings' tab, change the Default profile.

If you aren't using retail, you can also disable some IIS applications:

Regarding performance, don't forget to run the VM Profile Manager and choose AX2012Minimum profile if you don't need Retail (see details in VM documentation, namely in HowToUseVirtualMachineProfileManager.pdf).
