There could be several reasons for this. Are you familiar with SSMS? You will need to go into SQL and look at the logins for this database. Look to see of this user already exists. If it does, delete it and try again. Make sure it does not exist in SQL either.
Hello Richard,
This has been resolved.
I have deleted login from SQl but I also had to delete login from each company databases to make this work.
Thanks for your reply though.

That is exactly what you would have to do. Sounds like this was either server move or someone tried to create a user in SQL when they should always be created in GP. Glad it all worked out for you.
Hello,
I have this exact problem. My company is a new client to Great Plains so I apologize if this is a stupid question but we are trying to add a user to GP and we originally got the message that the user already existed even though we didn't see them when we retrieved the list of users. We deleted the SQL login and the user account from the APSGP database (my company's name is APS - Alberta Pensions Services) and now when we try and add the user, we get the "Creation of the login failed for an unknown reason" error.
We also have databases named DYNAMICS, DYNAMICS_SECURITY, TSTGP and about 40 others on the same SQL server. Is there any way to tell which databases I need to clean up?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Ken
I did a brute force deletion of the problem database user from every database they appeared in. This solved my problem.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this won't cause other issues.
Ho Richard,
I am facing same issue. I have check database and I didn't found the user ID which I was trying to create. If I create any user ID in GP I am getting this error.
Kindly advise what I have to do.
Regards,
Sanjay
Check for the logins not only in SQL but also under each database. They will be in there. There is security for SQL and each database. If you truly do not find them in there then use SQL Profiler to log the event as you try to create the user.
Hi Richard,
Thank you for your quick reply. I have checked all the databases and I did not found that user ID. I have tried to create this user on SQL and it got created. Previously I have an admin access to both Application as well as Database server. Recently there are changes happened in the access level. Although I am using sa login ID for all user creations and deletions but I never received this type of error before. I am getting this error to other GP instances which are installed on different server.
Please advise.
Have you tried running SQL Profiler to capture the real message? How about creating a user ID that you know has never existed before?
I can not run SQL profiler in production hours cause it may hang SQL server or activities of users. We have only 15 users accessing that GP. And this user ID is completely new. I am getting this error since I have tried to create this ID. I have tried with several other new IDs as well but there also I am getting same error. I am getting this error in other GP Instances as well which are installed on other servers.
