administration mode - Production instance?

Maybe I'm being stupid, but the administration mode is only available on our sandbox instances, not the production one.

Just to be clear, I'm in the CRM Admin Portal, in the Instances tab, when I select a sandbox instance I see the "Admin" icon and can click this to enter administration mode if I want.  The icon is not visible on the production instance.

Why would such a useful function only be available on the sandbox?

Thanks for any support

    Hi Andy,

Production instance is considered as live instance and hence is considered as always on environment. In case of sandbox instances, there can be cases where we want to restrict access to non administrator users. So, administration mode helps in achieving this. If we enable administration mode, then only administrators can access the sandbox environment.

If you can tell what is your requirement, I can guide you in that regards.

FYI: You can change type of production instance to Sandbox. Once you change the type, you can get the options available for sandbox instances. But I would like to know why you want that option on production instance so that I can guide you properly.

Yadnyesh, I was trying to find the answer to the same question. The reason I want to put Production into admin mode is to prevent any users from doing anything in it. Last night I imported a solution from my Test sandbox, but not all the changes I expected came through. I don't want the users to put in any new data until I get things fixed. Is there some way to block access temporarily?

    Hi,

Right now I'm preparing MB2-715 certification exam and reading this neilparkhurst.com/.../mb2-715-certification-microsoft-dynamics-365-customer-engagement-online-deployment-manage-sandboxes , probably it clears you.

You probably are well past this and have gone on to bigger and better things but in case someone else needs this to prevent users from accessing your production instance add a security group.

Have your O365 administrator do the following:

    • Navigate to the admin center-> Groups -> Add a group
    • If the type does not default to Security, choose it from the dropdown
    • Name the group something meaningful and put a good description in
    • After saving, open the security group from the list and add the owner and members

Now if you have the System Admin role in Dynamics 365 or access to the instance picker do the following:

    • Go to the Instance Picker
    • Choose your production instance
    • Click the Edit button
    • Add the newly created security group in the Security Group lookup

Now when users try to access the Dynamics 365 instance they will get a Your account has been disabled message. Just remember to remove it when you are finished.

Hope that helps and that you are having a lovely day wherever you are.
