Mystery of the Missing Data

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We will be moving our old server to a Hyper-V platform. Before proceeding, we first tested it on a separate server. We copy the application and then do a database restore. The following day, the users reported that there are missing data – around 4 to 5 specific tables in the distribution series were affected. The transactions missing are from different date span. We are not sure what went wrong. Have you experienced this?

We already did with the good back up and it was there. The only problem was with the other test server I was referring to. No, we are not doing the Overwrite because it is the backup of the same database. We are neither moving the database to another location.

Can you try restoring the same backup in another server and query those tables directly ?  Are you marking the option Overwrite the existing database (WITH REPLACE) during database restore?

We did as you mentioned upon restore. The said data were not physically there, but the backup used in the restoration upon checking are all intact. That's why we are wondering where did we go wrong. Its a simple restore. What you think?

    Hi,

If you already know the specific tables that are missing the records, I would query these tables directly in SQL (if you haven't already).  This will help determine if the problem is with the DB restore (as a first step we need to make sure the data is in the physical tables, because if it's not, then obviously you need to focus your efforts there).  If the data is in the SQL tables, then perhaps we are looking more into a GP permissions/security issue.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Actually the ones hit are the PM modules - PM00400, PM30200, PM80600 and PM30300. Dates varies like a year or 2 of historicals, then the whole month of the current year. Again is isolated to payment transactions. Yes, the crystal reports were pointed to the right server.

Can you give us additional details like transaction and their missing dates for further analysis?  Did you verify using the sql queries for the missing transactions?  Whether the  crystal reports pointing to the correct server?

We are using a full backup and the date was correct. Could crystal reports be a culprit?

My question here will be with regard to the database restore.  Are you using full database backup or Transaction log backup or differential database backup for this?  You may need to validate the date of the database backup which was used to restore.

Let me clarify further . The missing data are on the test server as we requested user to do further validation in order to ensure that our experimental activity was successful before applying or doing it on the live server.
