Windows 10 Default printer changes

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello,

I have set my customers default printer to Microsoft XPS Document Writer and I installed a zebra barcode printer.

When I go into manager and try to printer a label, everything works fine, but the default windows printer is now changed to the barcode printer.

I am running windows 10 and RMS 2.0.2022

If I change the default printer back to the original printer it will save until I try to printer a barcode using the barcode, at that point it switches the printer again.

Help

Thank you

Isaac

I would also make sure that you are signed in with the named Administrator account to make sure that it is not a permissions issue that is preventing the changes by disabling the default printer feature.

    Thank you,

Check with your Admin to see if they have a policy in place to approve/deny changes to it.

Also make sure you have Win 10 version 1511 OS Build 10586.00 or newer.  To see what version you have, right click on the Start button | Command prompt | type winver

This features isn't working for several of us who use Windows 10 Enterprise.  We have the feature turned off, yet it sporatically changes printer defaults.  Anyone else have this problem?

    Isaac,

    I answered this on the Partner site as well;

This is a new "feature" in Win 10, it always defaults to the last printer used.  To turn this "feature" off,

    1. In the search box, type as “settings”.
    2. Go to “settings” and select “devices”.
    3. Click on “printers and scanners” option on the left hand side.
    4. You will find all your printers listed on the screen, below that there is an option “Let Windows manage my default printer”.
    5. Turn “OFF” the option “When turned on, the default printer is the last used printer”.
    6. Now check whether you can choose the other printers or not.

    Great "feature" isn't it☺
