Can Sales Orders be setup to reserve Inventory at 'release to warehouse'?

Hello,

Have recently changed from processing orders as Production Orders to Sales Orders. We are having trouble setting up the sales order reservation in a way that is effective for how we process orders through the warehouse, without a lot of manual adjustments to reservations.

There seems to be only two options for how reservations can be setup on Sales Orders:

1. Automatic Reservation at sales order creation - this does not work in instances where the order of sales order creation does not match order of ship date.

Example: Sales Order A is created with multiple lines; one line contains an item not currently on hand. The entire sales order's ship date is extended until this item is ordered and arrives. Sales Order B is created next that contains one line of an on-hand item, ship date is set earlier that sales order A. However, this item is reserved now to the sales order with a later ship date. (Lead times and stocking vary drastically between the wide array of items)

2. Manual Reservation - some of our sales orders can contain +100 lines and manual reservation takes a large amount of admin time

Is there a way to setup reserving inventory once the sales order is released to warehouse?

What I'm finding is inventory must be reserved prior to releasing the sales order. Is there no way to change when a sales order reserves inventory, automate the reservations in a wave, or the order it is being released?

I'm probably overlooking it or it is obvious, but any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated!

Thank you,

R

    Hello RachelH0001,

If you are using Warehouse Management Processes, you can delay the reservation to teh moment when the sales order is about to be shipped.  On the warehouse form you can select a reservation policy that will be applied either:

    1- At Load Postinhg; and-or

2- When Sales Orders are relased using a batch job

For this to work, the reservation policy for the item (either global policy set on AR Parameters or Item specific policy set on Item Model Group) would be <Manual>.  All Sales Order lines reservation would be <Manual>.  Use  teh function for <Automatic Release of Sales Order< (Warehouse Management > Release to Warehouse > Automatic Release of Sales Order) with Batch Processing enabled

Alternatively, using Load Planning Workbench, you can release the load to the warehouse.

In both these methods, the system will attempt to reserve the line before processing the wave and creating the work and shipment.

There are several blogs online that explain the details and demonstrate the process.  My fave is from OrganixAx (using AX but same in D365 F&O): https://organicax.com/2016/02/09/wms-reserving-on-sales-or-warehouse/

    Danny,

Excellent. Thank you so much! This answers my question perfectly.

I could not find this specific setup, throughout researching this.

I have tested both of these setups (reservations at load posting and releasing by batch job), after switching the "Accounts receivable" parameters to Manual, and they work exactly as needed. Currently, we are going to setup the reservations at the release by batch job for our warehouse.

    Thanks again,

    Rachel

    Hello Rachel,

So glad it worked for you.  It is a very useful configuration combination to delay the reservation.

    Good luck with your project!

    Danny
