Support ADFS 2016 Server

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi Community,

First of all, i'm not a Dynamics guy but in the matter of facts i'm currently a little stuck with a CRM Topic.

I was on the way to upgrade the existing ADFS 2012 Servers to new ADFS 2016 Servers.

Now during planning of the change in the production environment (Removing the 2012 Servers from the Farm and raising the  ADFS Farm Level to 2016) i stumbled over the following article.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh699671.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396#Claims_and_IFD_requirements

Currently, this version of Microsoft Dynamics 365 doesn't support Active Directory Federation Services for Windows Server 2016 (AD FS 2016).

Is this still valid? as the current sign on requests are already happening against the ADFS 2016 Servers without any issues.

I would really appreciate if someone can answere these questions:

- Why is ADFS Server 2016 not be supported?

- When is ETA of ADFS Server 2016 Support?

- Why do i don't have issues even i'm already using ADFS 2016 Servers - is it because my Farm level is still on 2012?

PS: I found the following thread in the board... but last update is from may... sad if this is still in the same state...

Kind regards

Sorry, I didn't found a solution for this more like a workaround.

We now have a dedicated ADFS 2012 Farm for the CRM part and a new updated 2016 Farm for everything else.

We had to do it this way, so we can utilize 2016 Farm features.

I also think that CRM will never be supported on 2016 .. maybe 2019 - but only time will tell (at least 2019 is now available ... again ;-))

    Hi There,

Did you ever get a definitive answer to this question, I am being told by MS ADFS 4.0 (2016 Server) is not supported for D365, it is however working perfectly fine for claims based auth via a browser, we are trying and failing however to use Oauth and have been told by MS, Oauth just does not work and ADFS 4.0 is not supported\compatible.

Would be useful to know if you ever found out anything different.

    Regards

    Craig
