Impact of Meltdown and Spectre fix on AX 2012 R2 Performance

Hi all,

Most of us are well aware of "Meltdown and Spectre" issue recently making rounds on internet and impacting IT industry.

Well, we are also aware of how to fix it and I am sure by now, most of us would have applied this in our Windows, SQL environments etc.

Given the fact that this fix comes with a "Known Issue" of impacting the "CPU power" of the severs, are you experiencing noticeable slowness in your environments after applying this fix?

I am well aware that a lot of factors contribute to the "Performance", so not trying to blame slow AX on this but given the "known issue" which comes with this fix, I would like to understand what other customer's are facing / experiencing?

Has anyone reached to Microsoft on related to this? If Yes then appreciate if you can share the excerpts?

    Hello Alok,

Any time CPU speed is effected you will notice an impact on performance on the other end. Depending on how your performance was before the applied patches, the performance impact will vary as far as users actually noticing a deference.

Try performing some database maintenance before applying the patches to make sure you are running at peak performance.

This will minimize the effect and make it less noticeable for users.

My thoughts on this are this, apply the fixes and secure your customer data. That should be first priority.

You might want to reach out to MS or your MS Partners to help you with analyzing performance and recommending maintenance plans. If proper maintenance plans are not in place then you probably already have slowness issues and the patch will make thing worse in regards to performance.

on that note there are 2 additional new variants of Spectre & Meltdown now. These are known as 3a and 4a and be ready to hear about even more coming this July. Get your maintenance plans in order, if you haven't already, make sure you are running at peek performance because more patches will be released soon.

Always apply any changes to test first and try to understand the impact before going into PROD.

    Hope this helps!
