Migrate CRM 2011 from SBS 2008 to SBS2011 - side by side possible?

Hi all.

We're migrating CRM 2011 from SBS 2008 to SBS2011. The current SBS 2008 box has both CRM and SQL instaleld on it and I'll be putting the same config on the new server.

While the process itself seems fairly straight forward (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh699772.aspx#Redploy_CRM_Server) I want to ensure that there's minimal downtime to the users.

I'd like to install CRM on the new server, restore in the databases and have one of the key users log in to the new install and test all is well. I'd like them to be able to do this while the original installation is still running with the rest of the business working as normal on the old system. Once I get the all clear I'll then do a final backup and restore of the organisation database and update the DNS records to point to the new server. Is it possible to run two installs of CRM side by side like this?

Also our current setup is internet facing using claims based authentication (ADFS is installed on a second server). I can't find any guidance on migrating this so any tips would be appreciated.

    As long as you install crm in different SBS server , you can run both CRM's in parellel.There is nothing to migrate in regards to adfs server.All you have to do is create new relaying and trust parties thats going to point your new crm web server.

    Hi RNW,

    Installing SBS 2011 next to SBS2008 might be a more challenge, CRM can run next to eachother.

    About ADFS/IFD, you'll need to have certificates in place. You can however use the same ADFS server if you use other DNS records/names and another organizationname for CRM.

    I would advice the following steps:

    - Get SBS up and running

    - Install CRM 2011 with default settings

    - redeploy CRM database to new server (using another name!)

    - import the organization (using another name!)

    - check if all works with default settings on HTTP

    - if that works, try to get Claims Based and IFD working.

     Also here, use other names. otherwise you'll get issues with your existing CRM deployment.

    - use the noted blog article for that.

    Hi guys.

    Thanks for getting back to me.

    Setting up the SBS servers next to each other isn't a problem. They're doing that now as part of the migration that I'm doing.

    Remon, you mention importing the organization as another name. The business want to keep the existing Dynamics organisation name so that will be a problem for me. I didn't read anywhere that when migrating I'd need to change the name. Do you suggest this because I'm want to run them at the same time or is that standard practice for a migration? Could I not have the same organisation name but when testing use the hostname of the server to access Dynamics like serevr1.domain.local:5555 - granted that would generate a certificate warning in the browser but that wouldn't be a problem short term.

    I have another question but feel free to advise I post in another thread.

    I read that if you want to install CRM 2011 on SBS 2011 the install will fail unless you uninstall Windows Search Service. Have there been any hotfixes to work around this? Removing Windows Search on an SBS 2011 box stops some of the consoles working. Again I can work around this but if there's a patch rollup that I can slipstream into the install that would make my life a bit easier.

    Hi guys.

    Just wanted to let you know that the migration worked. Apologies for taking so long to reply but the migration was put on hold for a while.

    I had both organisations running side by side while the users tested and then once they were happy ran a backup of the live database and put it onto the new server and imported the organisation with the same name as the old one. All worked. Applied teh Claims based config and IFD, updated DNS and all went to plan.
