Empty Menus

Hi All,

I just enabled Project Accounting (my client is entitled to it and would like to play around with it in a test company).  I added the module via Tools-->Setup-->System-->Registration.  While that added it to my Navigation Pane, all of the menus are blank.  Is this a security issue?

I forgot to mention to you that when you install Project Accounting, most of the affected resources in GP (Form & Reports) are going to get an alternative security entry...

To assign the users the PA resources, you should use  Microsoft Dynamics GP menu >> Tools >> Setup >> System >> Alternate/Modified Forms and Reports

Create a new Alternate/Modified Forms and Reports ID and assign the resources to it. In return, you can then select this new ID in the user security to easily switch from the DEFAULT profile to the PA profile.

For your Revenue/Expense Deferral, you'll likely have to run the GP setup wizard to add the module into your launch file if this an optional feature of GP. Make sure your registration keys are valid for it.

The list of the registered modules can be reviewed here : Microsoft Dynamics GP menu >> Tools >> Setup >> System >> Registration

Sorry for not including this in my last post, but if I am having the same issue adding Revenue/Expense Deferral, would I also have to run the setup for this module?

Thanks for chiming in Beat.  My client is virtualized, so I will follow your advice.

    RE: Empty Menus

    Hi,

I second Leslie in this post, because I experienced that the hard way (thought it was not with a new module of GP, but the Business Portal). I thought too that playing in a Test 'company' would be just fine, but then realized that the setup wizard was just playing in every company Database, including the system DYNAMICS Db, and this without even asking your permission... :-(.

We run all our servers in a virtualized environment and thus it is very easy to clone your production system to create a TEST bed server... it is important if you want to have that system running on the same network (read VLAN) as your production system that your clone server gets a different name and that you don't forget to rename your SQL server instance as well... There is a KB from MS about how to create a TEST environment, but this is more for cases where you setup a whole new server and have to re-install everything and restore your production DBs.

Good luck with your tests, you'll see that on the long term it's worth the effort to have a 'spare' system to try new stuff out completely isolated from the production.

I appreciate your answer Leslie.  Thanks for saving me from what could have been a big headache.  I'm a power user, so the module most likely needs to be reinstalled.  Since, as you said, this would not be company specific, and could have an effect on the DYNAMICS system database, I'm definitely going to have them 'play' in a completely separate 'test' system.

Quick side question - how would a client generally go about setting up a completely separate test system?  What I mean is, are they only licensed for one install of the software they are registered for?

    Thanks again Leslie.

    RE: Empty Menus

Unless you are a power user, it is very likely a security issue. Also, make sure you have Project Accounting installed, it's a separate dictionary that you would need to check off during the installation. You can go to Add/Remove programs and Modify GP if you want to install it later.

I think you may need to run (open) GP Utilities after you install it. Not sure on that one.

With all that said, let me add that under no circumstances would I load Project Accounting into my production system just to play around with it, ESPECIALLY at the client's site. I know you said 'test company', but company is not good enough. You need a test system so that you do not modify any of the tables in the DYNAMICS system database.

If you just install it to play around with it, I guarantee it will give you a problem later if you do not implement it. I can't tell you when, but I am 100% certain that it will at some time.  I would give the same advice for any module. If you want to take it for a test drive, that's fabulous, just do it in a test system.

    Kind regards,

    Leslie
