Dynamics 365 Can't Edit or Create workflow

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

I updated Dynamics CRM 2011 to Dynamics 365 but I'm getting an error whenever I try to edit a workflow or create a new one. Note that, this only happens when it's in Draft. When it's Activated I can open the workflow and see all the steps.

However, as soon as it's deactivated, I get the following error:

[CrmException: Exception retrieving custom activity info - Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]

Thanks for this idea. I also exported plugins and imported again, and found the root cause of the issue.

I wrote about it in a blog post in case somebody find it useful

I had a similar, but not exact, issue.  I ended up adding all custom assemblies to a solution, exporting it, and importing it.  That seems to have allowed me to edit and create workflows again.

Actually turns out it is as Varadarajan suggested, it was a problem with a custom workflow that was causing CRM to fail when trying to load the custom workflows when we try to open a Draft workflow.

Since our organization was heavily customized. The best way for us to solve this was to create a sandbox server with a copy of the DB where we can edit stuff without affecting our actual DEV servers.

I deleted all the workflows available. I create a solution with all our Custom Workflow Activities, browsed the Plug in Assemblies and sorted by 'Modified On' ASC. That way I could get which custom workflows have been modified the oldest. I started deleting one custom codeActivity at a time, and everytime I delete, I check a newly created Draft Workflow if it still has the error. Luckily, when I removed the third Custom code Activity, I was able to load the draft WF so I could know which Custom Workflow was causing the problem for us.

    Hi Varadarajan,

Thanks for this. I'm taking a look at it.

    Cheers,
