Can we migrate historical data from AX old version to AX 2012? Is it at all possible? If yes, what could be the best possible way to do that? Kindly suggest.

Kind regards,

Tarun Pan

Do you know about the AX Upgradation ?

It tells the answer to your question?

Data Import/Export Framework is the recommended tool. Also look at Plan data import, export, and migration on MSDN.

Depends upon the historical data as well. Assuming this is transactional what do you want? I would advise sales history is cube reported, depending upon your previous versions you may have a completely new reporting metric to content with. If it is customer/vendor transaction do you need the detail of the lines or just the outstanding debt? Item transactions are useful but then it all depends on whether you are upgrading or re-implementing. Just like any legacy ERP system really, except for the upgrade path.

    Tarun,

There really are several things to consider with this question.

First, as a rule, there is an upgrade path for version n-1 and version n-2 to current version within AX.  For example, AX 4 and AX 2009 are currently supported to migrate into AX 2012.  This is the Data Migration Framework native to AX as part of an upgrade and not to be confused with the Data Import/Export Framework mentioned by Martin.  The data migration framework performs all of the normalization into the new data structures from previous versions, but as with anything, test test test.

Second, if you are concerned primarily with master data only, then the Data Import/Export Framework might be the tool.  Some other mechanism can be used to mash the data from the systems, such as a data warehouse.  There will be some translation of the data structures from the previous version, but this model works well.

I would suggest analyzing your data profile in order to understand the scale of your effort.  I personally find manipulating large datasets out of AX and back into a different version via Excel to be clunky and prefer ODBC connectivity.  So understanding your data distribution and deciding what actually needs to be migrated is a good starting point.

thanks a lot. I understood. Only one thing..they are having some customization as well in their old version now if i use data import/export framework then would those changes be uploaded?

    TARUN PAN,

Remember that data import/export framework would used to import or export the masters/Open transactions/Histotical data .

    Not the Application changes .
