CRM for Outlook Client - Compatibility Question

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello,

My company is currently using Dynamics CRM2011 and the CRM 2011 for Outlook Client.  The plug-in is solely used for the "Set Regarding" feature to track emails to projects in our system.

We have a mix of workstations running the following:

Windows 7, Windows 10, Office 2010, Office 2013.

In November we are upgrading to CRM365, so I am assuming the CRM Outlook Client will also need to be upgraded.  Our developing is telling us that the CRM Outlook Client is NOT backwards compatible, so we cannot upgrade the client on the workstations until after we GO LIVE with our new CRM365.

I thought that it was backwards compatible so that we could upgrade Outlook Client on the workstations ahead of time without breaking functionality with CRM2011.

So I have multiple questions I need answered:

  1. Are the CRM for Outlook clients backwards compatible?  Or is there one specifically that would be that would work with CRM2011 and CRM365?
  2. If the client NOT backwards compatible, what is the best version of the CRM Outlook Client to work on our variety of OS and Office versions?  Keeping in mind we are mostly interested in the tracking of emails and not other features (if any).

Thanks for the assistance.

RE: CRM for Outlook Client - Compatibility Question

    Hi,

    That is correct.

The Dynamics 365 Outlook client is not backwards compatible with CRM 2011.

If you are moving to Dynamics 365, you should use the Dynamics 365 Outlook Client.

Saying that, the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Outlook Client has been deprecated.

It will still work with Dynamics 365, and most likely version 9 of Dynamics 365 (coming soon), but in the next release of Dynamics 365 (version 10), it will no longer be available.

You should start looking at the Microsoft Dynamics 365 App for Outlook.

There are both pros and cons, but the biggest one that your IT team will probably be happy about is the fact that it doesn't have the same requirement for installation.

    Hope this helps you.
