Dear experts,

We are going to upgrade AX R2 to R3, but there are some new modules that we created based on standard modules. If we upgrade those new modules into R3, what we need to do? Could you please provide me step by step on doing the upgrade?

Thanks and best regards.

    Hi,

You need to in-place upgrade for migrating R2 to R3 and there is specific process being recommended for this. We successfully upgraded AX2012 R2 to R3 by following this process.

Refer following the link(Check for the case from R2 to R3):

    (Scenario: Perform in-place upgrade to AX 2012 R2 or AX 2012 R3 [AX 2012])

    technet.microsoft.com/.../jj733502.aspx

Briefly, steps are initially we need to have a test system(where we do the upgrade), take code and data backups, upgrade code first(custom models one after another), run code upgrade checklist for an in-place upgrade, data upgrade & synchronize. After upgrading we should manually add the menus to the Mainmenu to view the custom modules.

To do it correctly, you have to do a fit-gap analysis on what business processes are you currently using, and what are the new features of R3 that has either replaced, or extended existing features, or if it lives side-by-side but with different feature set.

To give an example they have new Credit card management and payment interfaces, so we had to re-think our payment solution that used to be from an ISV, and re-implement it based on the new standard code during upgrade.

The largest area of change is for Warehousing and Transportation management, since Microsoft has purchased and integrated the Blue HorseShoe WAX/TRAX ISV solution to be an integral part of R3 with its' advanced reservation hierarchy, load planning, handheld warehousing device tool, and many other functionality, which you should consider implementing.

Once you have done the fit-gap analysis and you see what business process changes and reconfiguration you need to do, you can then move forward to also check what customizations should you roll forward, re-implement, or completely throw out.

After you have planned all this, you can go ahead with the above mentioned in-place code upgrade.

As you see, this is a task which requires the knowledge of an AX Partner who knows the product, and been through multiple upgrade projects to have the confidence.

Do not do this on your own, if you have no idea, since it will take several months or up to a year to do it right anyway.
